Phantom Blade Zero: open world or not? How the world works

Updated: 6 min read

Is Phantom Blade Zero an open world game

No. In the State of Play on August 17, 2026, Liang said the game is "not an open world game, nor is it a linear adventure from beginning to end" (quoted by PC Gamer). As early as 2023 he described it as a "semi-open world" with several maps of reasonable size, handcrafted and filled with activities, instead of one huge continuous area built from reused assets.

Steam shows an "Open World" tag, but that is a label from players, not from the developers.

In short: this is not one map you ride across for hours. It is a series of large areas that connect into one world and let you return to places you have already seen.

Eight maps, one world

According to the State of Play, your journey is guided by eight hand-painted maps in the Chinese ink wash style. In complex regions they give only a rough sense of direction and leave the rest to you. The maps connect into a single world. The developers say they were painted by young artists from the Chinese painting department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), on Xuan paper, without AI.

Liang told Epic the map is not "a checklist of side quests or very clear guidance". PC Gamer judged that it offers "a bit more aid than a mapless soulslike". As you explore and rest at bells, more of the artwork fills in.

S-GAME has not officially published the names of the eight maps or the chapters. We do not guess them, and we will update this article after launch.

Bells: checkpoints and fast travel

Bells do two jobs:

  1. Checkpoint: after you die you return to a bell, and bosses have bells nearby.
  2. Fast travel: bells "enable fast travel between discovered locations" (State of Play).

At bells you rest and, according to press hands-on reports, upgrade abilities in the skill tree (details: skills and progression).

Enemies do not respawn. What that means

The 4Gamer interview says defeated enemies do not come back and resources on the map are finite. You also lose nothing you must recover after dying (Epic: "You don't lose any resources on death").

The consequence for you: the Remnant Dust currency is limited, so you must choose what to upgrade. The developers soften this: weapon upgrades can be undone with the Reforging Talisman, which refunds materials (details in the weapons article). Liang puts it simply: he wants everything in the game to have value so you do not repeat the same content. The exact Remnant Dust costs are not known before launch.

Side quests: a few, but deep

Liang told Epic that instead of "thousands of side quests" there are "several, very deep and dramatic" ones, about wuxia or revenge. He favors density of experience over quantity. The official State of Play text adds that you will meet citizens in need, and some side quests may open new story paths. Game Informer described Soul being able to sneak up on enemies, open shortcuts and find characters who offer missions.

Metroidvania elements

Liang called the game "Soulslite" in RPG Site: it borrows a layered 3D level design but does not push it too far, so "you won't get lost, and we have a map." On gating, he said the game has around 10 different kinds of keys and locks. A new weapon can be a "key" to a place you saw earlier, for example a hammer that breaks fragile ground.

From press sessions: the Dread Axe (a Phantom Edge from the boss Peng Meng) opened areas that had been sealed off. Epic also saw anchor points at chasms that require a grappling hook, and a sack in a tree that needs a bow. That is the state of the demo and may change in the final version.

Known locations

From official materials we know of:

  • Pangzhen Township (Pang Town), a rainy town known from the game Rainblood, rebuilt from scans of old Chinese towns. Shown officially on August 18, 2025.
  • A valley hit by the Transcendence plague and a steampunk tower in Chapter 1 (per Epic's hands-on; the tower is said to be based on a scan of an abandoned steelworks in Beijing).
  • From the State of Play: villages, valleys, lakes, a valley overrun by bandits, an abandoned warehouse with hanging puppets, a steam-powered iron tower, and a vast lake you cross on a peculiar high-speed vessel.

Wikis that list named regions have no official confirmation, so we do not repeat them.

Secrets and hidden bosses

PlayStation Blog: "secrets are hidden throughout the Wulin". Epic described a message carved in Chinese characters on a wall and secret bosses off the beaten path. In earlier demos, many visited areas and bosses were optional. We give no details, to avoid spoiling discovery. Bosses are a separate topic: boss list.

How Soul moves

Game Informer noted cliff climbing on walls marked with sword cuts and very fast ladder climbing ("like Spider-Man"). Whether there is a double jump or sprint is unknown, because the materials do not confirm it.

Everything here comes from announcements, the State of Play and press sessions. Reviews (embargo around October 26) may change the picture, for example regarding map size and the number of quests.

FAQ

Does Phantom Blade Zero have an open world?

No. It is eight hand-designed maps connected into one world. According to the director it is neither an open world nor a linear game.

How big is the map?

The developers have not given sizes in kilometers or hours of exploration. We only know the structure: eight connected maps and bell travel.

Is there fast travel?

Yes. Bells let you travel quickly between discovered locations and also work as checkpoints.

Do enemies respawn?

According to the 4Gamer interview they do not, so Remnant Dust and resources on the map are finite.
