What Phantom Blade Zero is about
Phantom Blade Zero is a dark wuxia action game built on Unreal Engine 5. You play Soul, a swordsman with a wounded heart and 66 days left to live. According to the Steam description, he is framed for murdering his master. Hunted across the martial world, he has to uncover a conspiracy before his time runs out.
An older S-GAME announcement fills in the background: Soul is an elite assassin of a secret organization, The Order. He was framed for the murder of its patriarch and badly hurt in the manhunt that followed. A mystic healer saved his life, but the makeshift cure lasts only 66 days.
That is the whole story as far as the official descriptions go. This article contains no spoilers.
"Soul" is the hero's name, not a genre label. It is only a coincidence of sound with FromSoftware's "Souls" games. For the genre question, read is it a soulslike.
The world: Kungfupunk, Phantom World and the Wulin
The developers call the style Kungfupunk: classic martial arts from wuxia cinema collide with punk fantasy, cold steel and mechanical prosthetics. The 2023 announcement describes the "Phantom World", a universe where Chinese kung fu, steampunk-style machines and occult arts meet. The S-GAME site adds folk horror to the mix.
The land Soul travels through is called the Wulin (the PlayStation Blog calls it "our dark wuxia world, a place rife with conflict and intrigue"). Enemies include assassins, people who have succumbed to darkness and martial arts masters who plot against you. There is no full cast list on the game's site, so the table holds only what official texts and press demo reports confirm. Other named bosses (for example the Seven Stars Sword Formation from the "Year of the Snake" trailer) are in the boss list.
Donnie Yen: his role in the game
The most common mistake: Donnie Yen does not play Soul. Soul's face and movements come from Yucheng. Yen has two roles in the game, both officially confirmed by S-GAME and the PlayStation Blog:
- Creative Consultant since 2023. He helped shape the kung fu style and fight design. According to creator Soulframe Liang, he also brought his stunt team to the motion capture sessions.
- Mó Yuan, Soul's father. Yen provided the face and motion capture. You can fight Mó Yuan (officially: "Crossing paths with Mó Yuan will keep you on your toes").
Sources differ on two points. First, a copy of an IGN article on We Are PlayStation calls Yen a "co-producer", but his official title is Creative Consultant. Second, whether Yen also voiced Mó Yuan is not confirmed officially: S-GAME and PlayStation write only about face and motion capture, while Game Informer mentions a voice. We will check after launch.
The action director is Kenji Tanigaki, who, according to the PlayStation Blog, demonstrates every movement to animators as a reference.
Do you need to know Rainblood and Phantom Blade
Officially we know this much: Liang calls Phantom Blade Zero the "spiritual rebirth" of his 2010 game "Rainblood: Town of Death", which grew into the mobile Phantom Blade series (mostly in China). The game is far larger, but its core is unchanged. S-GAME has not said outright that knowing earlier games is unnecessary, but this is a new story, so nothing suggests you need them.
Do not confuse it with the mobile games "Phantom Blade" and "Phantom Blade: Executioners": those are older, separate titles.
Dubbing: English and Chinese
The game has full dubbing in English and Chinese, with lip-sync in both languages (Liang's letter from April 10, 2026). There is no Polish version, so you cannot switch the game to Polish. Subtitle details are in languages and subtitles. S-GAME has not named the voice actors, so we do not list any.

For parents: brutal sword fights, blood and dark folk horror (for example puppets with faces and a ritual in an abandoned warehouse, per Game Informer's demo description). The game is single-player only.
New Year trailers: Year of the Snake and Year of the Horse
- Year of the Snake Trailer is the gameplay trailer from January 21, 2025: a full duel with the boss Seven Stars Sword Formation, followed by a second phase called "String Puppet".
- Before it came Year of the Dragon on February 1, 2024, with a scene in the style of traditional Chinese painting.
- "Year of the Horse": we found no official S-GAME trailer under that name. It is not on the list of official trailers.
