Biome order at a glance
| # | Biome | Where on the map | Character level | Flame level |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Springlands | south-west (start) | 1–10 | 1–2 |
| – | Low Meadows (part of the Springlands) | eastern edge of the Springlands | 5+ | – |
| 2 | Revelwood | north-west, above the Springlands | 10–15 | 3 |
| – | Blackmire (part of Revelwood) | passage in north-western Revelwood | 13–15 | – |
| 3 | Nomad Highlands | center of the map | 15–20 | 4 |
| 4 | Kindlewastes | east | 20–30 (north 20–25, south 25–30) | 5 |
| 5 | Albaneve Summits | north-east | 30–40 | 6–8 |
| 6 | Veilwater Basin | north-center, between Blackmire and Albaneve | 35–45 | 8–9 |
| 7 | Cinder's Cradle (new in 1.0) | north, beyond the gates past Veilwater Basin | not given by the developers | the next level after 9 |
The wiki and two guides (Pindrop, xGamingServer) agree on these levels and locations — they reflect the pre-1.0 game. Most biomes aren't locked, but enemy levels and the Shroud set this order. In 1.0 a quest is marked "difficult" when its area and enemies are at least 2 levels above your character.
Where does Blackmire fit? It isn't a separate stage: it's a swamp (sub-biome) inside Revelwood for levels 13–15, with its own Ancient Spire. You reach it through a passage in the north-west of Revelwood.
Flame and Shroud time — what you need for each biome
Your Flame level (you upgrade it at a Flame Altar) decides which Shroud you can enter: the Shroud's level equals your Flame level, and anything higher (red Shroud) kills you. Each level also adds Shroud time. Higher levels need a boss trophy — and that boss tells you which biome you have to clear.
| Flame | Shroud time | Trophy in the recipe | Where the boss is |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | about 5 min | – | start |
| 2 | 6 min | – (Spark, resin, bones, fur…) | Springlands |
| 3 | 7 min | Scavenger Matron | Springlands: Hill of Scavengers, north-east of the Ancient Spire |
| 4 | 8 min | Fell Wispwyvern | Revelwood: The Pike in Pikemead's Reach |
| 5 | 9 min | Fell Monstrosity | Nomad Highlands: Cradle of Dusk, in the Shroud west-northwest of the Ancient Spire |
| 6 | 10 min | Fell Sicklescythe | Kindlewastes: e.g. Haunted Sun Temple, Ridgeback Mine |
| 7 | 11 min | Fell Cyclops | Albaneve Summits: the Elixir Well from the quest "Ignite The Coldest Elixir Well" |
| 8 | 12 min | Fell Dragon Youngling | Albaneve Summits: Howling Peak |
| 9 | 13 min | Hydrak'Dal | Veilwater Basin: the temple from the quest "Vengeance" (from the Fisher) |
| 10 (1.0) | not given by the developers | not given by the developers | unlocked before you enter Cinder's Cradle |
| 11 (1.0) | not given by the developers | – | after defeating "the biggest threat" to Embervale |
The table for levels 2–9 comes from the pre-1.0 wiki. In 1.0 Keen Games made levels 6–9 cheaper and weakened how Shroud time bonuses stack, but added many more hourglasses. The changelog doesn't number the level before Cinder's Cradle — it's 10, because 9 used to be the highest and the "final" level in 1.0 is 11. Level 10 raises the limit to 15 altars, level 11 to 16 and lets altars push back the Shroud.
Biome by biome
Springlands (level 1–10)
- Landmarks: Cinder Vault (start), Longkeep village, Braelyn Bridge, the Ancient Spire north of the bridge, Fort Kelvin, the Egerton Salt Mines. A second spire stands in the Low Meadows.
- Resources: stone, salt, Flintstone, wax, resin, fur.
- Enemies: Scavengers (e.g. in Rookmore and Wescott), Vukah, weaker Fell, Hollow in graveyards, wolves. Boss for Flame 3: Scavenger Matron.
Revelwood and Blackmire (10–15)
- Landmarks: the capital Pikemead's Reach, Thornhold, Willow Crush, the Sunken Ancient City, the Revelwood Hollow Halls.
- Resources: Copper Ore, Lump of Clay, Amber (in the Shroud), Flax, Hardwood. In Blackmire: Blackmire Bark and Blackmire Heartwood.
- Enemies: Scavengers, Fell (Fell Boar, Fell Knight), boars. Blackmire is dominated by Vukah, Snapjaws bursting out of the mud and Giant Wasps. Boss for Flame 4: Fell Wispwyvern.
- 1.0: more chests in the Springlands and Revelwood, reworked terrain and forests, more save points on the Blackmire spire.
Nomad Highlands (15–20)
- Landmarks: the twin volcanoes of the Pillars of Creation, Umber Hollow (dense Shroud in the middle of the region), Raven's Keep, the Mining Rift.
- Resources: Tin Ore, Limestone, Fossilized Bone.
- Enemies: mostly Vukah, Scavengers, Fell (Depthdweller, Shroud Stalker), the Sabertooth Tiger. Boss for Flame 5: Fell Monstrosity.
- 1.0: easier to find your way through the Shroud and back out, 3 new save points in the Shroud, a smoother transition to the Kindlewastes.
Kindlewastes (20–30)
- Landmarks: 5 Sun Temples, canyons, the Ternion Mine and Ridgeback Mine. The Shroud splits the region into the north (20–25) and south (25–30).
- Resources: Iron Ore, Sulfur, Saffron, palm wood, Lapislazuli, sandstone.
- Enemies: Scavengers, Fell, Vukah in the north-east, Hollow, Draconian Vultures, scorpions. Boss for Flame 6: Fell Sicklescythe.
Albaneve Summits (30–40)
- Landmarks: Howling Peak — the highest point in Embervale, ruined castles, Rothstep, Wickmouth.
- Resources: Silver Ore, Coal, obsidian, amethyst, Conifer Logs.
- Enemies: strong Fell, Scavengers, spiders, snow leopards, Frost Draconian Vultures. Bosses: Fell Cyclops (Flame 7) and Fell Dragon Youngling on Howling Peak (Flame 8).
- 1.0: the changelog heavily nerfs "the boss in the Albaneve Summits" (without naming it): less health, a grounded phase for melee players, a wider arena with grappling anchors. A new Hollow Halls is open.
Veilwater Basin (35–45)
- Landmarks: Drak'Dal temples, Ancient ruins, lakes, limestone arches.
- Resources: Gold Ore (often underwater), Aquamarine, Mother-Of-Pearl, tropical wood.
- Enemies: the lizardfolk Drak, Scavengers, crabs. Boss for Flame 9: Hydrak'Dal.
- 1.0: a new Hollow Halls is open ("bring your snorkel", says Keen), and the gates to the north beyond the biome are open.
Cinder's Cradle — the new 1.0 biome
What the changelog of October 14, 2026 tells us:
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Location | the north of the map, beyond the now open gates past Veilwater Basin |
| Size | between Blackmire and Veilwater Basin |
| Look | lava and ruins below, floating islands of the Ancients above |
| Shroud Roots | 12 new |
| Enemies | a new faction with 14 new enemy types (37 including variants in other factions) |
| Entry | first the next Flame level (15-altar limit) |
| Locks | new Archaic lockpicks needed from Cinder's Cradle on |
| Character | max character level 50, gear up to 55 |
The developers haven't given Cinder's Cradle's level range, boss names or resources. Whether it has its own Ancient Spire is also unknown.
New edge areas and Hollow Halls
- All the old biomes, and especially the Springlands, Blackmire and the Kindlewastes, got new areas near the edge of the world — with quests, points of interest and 6 new Shroud Roots. Keen warns they have fewer points of interest than the main route.
- The main quest leads to structures in older biomes whose doors stayed shut for years.
- 2 new Hollow Halls (group dungeons): in the Albaneve Summits and Veilwater Basin.
- Most former no-build zones are now open for bases.
How the in-game map works
- The map reveals itself as you explore.
- Ancient Spire: at the top, the Flame marks the biome's Ancient Obelisks on your map. Each Obelisk then reveals nearby Shroud Roots (a skill point each) and Flame Shrines (for Sparks). Map Genie notes that the spires themselves don't reveal Shroud Roots.
- Custom markers: since 1.0 you can give them any name. Only you can see them — other players in the world can't.
- The compass in 1.0 has finer markings and correctly shows the direction of other players.
- Useful spots: Elixir Wells (3 skill points), Shroud Roots (1 point), Return Beacons (respawn points in the Shroud). More on resources and mines: where to find resources.
Fast travel
| Point | How to unlock | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ancient Spire | climb to the top and talk to the Flame | before 1.0 there were 8 spires: Springlands, Low Meadows, Revelwood, Blackmire, Nomad Highlands, Kindlewastes, Albaneve Summits, Veilwater Basin |
| Flame Altar | place an altar (5 stones) | every altar you own is a destination; limit 10, in 1.0 up to 15 and 16 |
| Bed (since 1.0) | go to sleep | "It is now possible to fast-travel while sleeping in a bed" |
You can't travel out of the Shroud — leave it first. Spires are jumping puzzles and traps with no enemies; the first one, in the Springlands, needs the Grappling Hook. How to get there: beginner's guide.

FAQ
In what order should I explore the biomes?
Springlands → Revelwood (with Blackmire) → Nomad Highlands → Kindlewastes → Albaneve Summits → Veilwater Basin → Cinder's Cradle. Enemy levels and Flame levels set this order.
Where does Blackmire come in the order?
In Revelwood — it's the swampy part for levels 13–15. You do it together with Revelwood, before the Nomad Highlands.
How do I get to Cinder's Cradle?
Through the gates to the north beyond Veilwater Basin, after unlocking the next Flame level. Don't go in without your best gear and food — the developers describe a "brand new threat".
How many Ancient Spires are there?
There were 8 before 1.0 — one per biome plus the Low Meadows and Blackmire. The developers haven't said whether 1.0 adds more.
Do the interactive maps include 1.0 yet?
On the morning of October 15, 2026 none of the maps we checked had Cinder's Cradle. Until they catch up, explore the new areas yourself and mark key spots with named markers.
