Is it the servers?
Before you change any settings, check whether the problem is on GGG's side. There is no official server status page: pathofexile.com/status returns a 404 error. Sites that claim to show an "official live status" are not telling the truth.
Where GGG actually posts about downtime:
- Forum, Early Access Announcements: news and "Game Status updates" for PoE 2.
- Early Access Patch Notes: planned downtime as "Server Maintenance" threads. It usually lasts 15–20 minutes.
- Known Issues: the list of bugs GGG is already looking into.
- X (@pathofexile): on launch day GGG said updates would be posted there if the site was unavailable.
- Playing on PS5 or Xbox? Console news goes to the Console Announcements section.
If GGG has announced nothing and only you have the problem, look for the cause on your end. In mid-October 2026 players on the forum are reporting latency spikes after patch 0.5.5e. GGG has not replied yet.
What to check, in order
- Restart the client. GGG deploys some patches without restarting the servers ("restartless"). You then need to restart the game to get the update.
- Change your Gateway. On the login screen, open Options and pick the region closest to you (details below).
- Switch to a cable. According to GGG, Wi-Fi is one of the most common causes of connection issues. Pause any background downloads too.
- Check whether it is graphics or network. Players suggest this: F1 toggles the performance graphs, and setting Graph Details to "All Graphs" shows the "Shader" graph. Spikes on it during fights or in a new area mean shader loading, not the network.
- Set your graphics using the table below.
- Verify the game files on Steam: Library → right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → "Verify integrity of game files". There is no official verification guide for the GGG client.
Graphics settings and stuttering
| Option | What it does | Advice | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dynamic Resolution | variable render resolution | turn it on when your graphics card can't keep up | official (GGG, 0.4.0) |
| Render resolution | the resolution the game renders at | lower it when your graphics card is the limit | official (GGG, 0.4.0) |
| Vsync | syncs frames with your monitor | keep "Locked" (the default since 0.5.4e); "Adaptive" has frame pacing problems | official (GGG, 0.5.4e) |
| Renderer: DirectX 12 / Vulkan | the game's graphics engine | player advice conflicts: try both | DirectX 12: Steam; Vulkan: GGG; advice: players |
| Engine Multithreading | engine multithreading (name from player posts) | advice conflicts: test it on and off | players |
| F1, Graph Details | performance graphs, including "Shader" | use them to diagnose | players |
With version 0.4.0, GGG wrote that its CPU optimizations give "at least a 25% boost" in frame rate, but only when you are CPU bound. When your graphics card is the limit, only a lower resolution or Dynamic Resolution helps.
After patch 0.5.4e the game recompiles all shaders, so the first launch is slower. GGG also disabled the Fossilize layer on Steam, which could make the Steam shader cache grow to an immense size. Old advice about Fossilize and "pre-caching" may be out of date.
Guides name other options (upscaling, frame rate limits) in different ways, and GGG has not described them. We don't list names we can't confirm. Steam recommends an SSD but does not require one, though players say shader loading stutters are worse on an HDD. System requirements and Steam Deck: Path of Exile 2 system requirements.
Network: Gateway, ping and network mode
Gateway is the region you connect to the game through. A GGG employee (Jeff_GGG) in December 2024: you change it in Options on the login screen. Players reported back then that their chosen region reset to "auto", and GGG said it was looking into it. Whether this is fixed in 0.5.5 is unknown. In April 2025 some UK players got rid of disconnects by switching from London to Frankfurt or Amsterdam.
What GGG's official connection guide says:
- The game uses little bandwidth. Latency and its variation (jitter) matter more, so a Speedtest result tells you little.
- Instance servers use identical hardware in all regions.
- To the question "lag since the latest patch?", GGG answers "probably not", because it rarely changes the network code.
- To measure the route, GGG recommends WinMTR: take the server address from the last "Connecting to instance server at" entry in your
Client.txtfile and collect 300–500 packets. Packet loss that continues to the end of the trace is real. One router along the way not responding is usually normal.
Network mode (Lockstep / Predictive): GGG officially describes both modes only for Path of Exile 1. In PoE 2, players changed it in the config file, but GGG has not confirmed this, and it is unknown whether the option is in the 0.5.5 menu. It helped some players and did nothing for others. Don't treat it as a sure fix.
VPN: the community guide PoE Community Help suggests one only as a test, when the problem is in the route to the server. GGG has no stated position on this.
Common errors and what to do
| Message | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| An unexpected disconnection occurred | connection to the server dropped | check GGG's announcements, restart the game, plug in a cable |
| ABNORMAL DISCONNECTION Error: Failed to join any instances | character "stuck" after a server crash | on the character select screen press Ctrl+Enter to enter town or your hideout |
| Failed to connect to instance | stuck area instance | travel by waypoint or Ctrl+click the zone name for a new instance |
| Unknown Object Type Serialized by Server | client and server out of sync | change Gateway, create a new instance, restart the game |
| Operation Time Out | maintenance in progress | wait until the downtime ends, restart the game |
| Disconnected From Patching Server | overloaded patch server | wait, restart the client; run WinMTR to patch-poe2.poecdn.com |
| Unable to connect to login server | no connection to the login server | flush your DNS cache, restart your router, check your firewall and antivirus |
| Login queue | GGG lets players in in batches | wait; you can't skip the queue; restart if it doesn't move |
The Ctrl+Enter tip came from GGG support in an email a player quoted on the forum on 4.06.2026. The instance and patch server tips come from Game8, the login server tips from PoE Community Help.
What to expect on December 11
On December 11, 2026 version 1.0 launches: a big balance patch, the Duelist and Acts V–VI. Earlier launches show what to expect.
Early Access launch, 6.12.2024. GGG had already delayed the launch by 3 weeks because of server infrastructure work. On launch day it made last-minute database upgrades that delayed the servers going live, then had to restart the realm because of a configuration problem. Database shards added at the last minute gave many characters the same ID. GGG's website went down and players could not claim their Steam keys. GGG warned about weekend queues in advance and let players in in batches. According to PCGamesN, 450,000 people were playing on Steam alone that day, and December 2024 set the all-time record: 578,562 concurrent players on Steam (SteamCharts).
Outage on 4.06.2026 (version 0.5.0). A hotfix deployed at 10:45 New Zealand time disconnected many players. The build was missing a passive tree data file, and crash dumps filled the server disks and blocked the rollback. The game was fully back at 11:54, about 70 minutes later. GGG announced safeguards against this happening again.
Version 1.0 will be free, so there could be more players than 578,562. That is our assessment: GGG has not given a queue forecast. What this means for launch day:
- Before the Early Access launch you could download the game early (Steam and Epic from the library, the GGG client a day before launch). GGG has not yet said whether this will happen for 1.0. If it does, download the game ahead of time.
- When GGG's website is down, check X (@pathofexile).
- After a hotfix, restart your client.
Where to report a problem
- support@grindinggear.com is only for payments, microtransactions and account issues. Typing
/verifyin the in-game chat generates a code that speeds up your request. - Technical problems and bugs: the "Technical Support" button on the support page leads to the Early Access Bug Reports forum. There is no separate technical form.
- For lag, attach your WinMTR result (on pastebin, for example) and point out where the packet loss starts. Forum helpers say GGG won't investigate without it.
- The
Client.txtfile is in thelogssubfolder of the game folder; on Steam:steamapps\common\Path of Exile 2\logs. - For faster help from other players, try PoE Community Help.
