Before you start looking
- Resources follow the biomes. Each new biome has a higher level and new materials: Springlands (level 5) → Revelwood (13) → Nomad Highlands (18) → Kindlewastes (25) → Albaneve Summits (33) → Veilwater Basin (40). The new 1.0 biome, Cinder's Cradle, lies north of the Veilwater Basin.
- In 1.0 the game tells you the source. Changelog: "Acquisition hints for resources are now also shown in the details menu of the resources" — open a resource's details in your inventory or in a recipe to see where it comes from.
- Locations are based on the wiki and Early Access guides. Version 1.0 reworked the terrain in parts of the Springlands, Revelwood, Blackmire and the Nomad Highlands, so individual deposits may have moved — the biome and type of place (mine, cave, Shroud) stay the same.
What version 1.0 changes for resources
| Change (1.0 changelog) | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Gold coins in loot chests "all over Embervale" | No need to wait for the Veilwater Basin — you collect coins from the start |
| Recipes that need stone use the stone of the biome you're in | No more trips back to the Springlands for stone |
| Several mining materials are easier to mine, "especially… stones" | Fewer pickaxe swings |
| More Archaic Essence from mining terrain (all tiers) | Faster gem upgrades in weapons |
| Bigger aquamarine nodes ("Increased the size of aquamarine ore nodes") | More ore per node in the Veilwater Basin |
| Passion flowers and Saffron give more when picked | Less running around for dyes and food |
| Armor sets unlock with every Flame upgrade | You no longer need to pick up the "right" resource to get a recipe |
| Flame levels 6–9 are cheaper, without Electric Organs and Poison Stings | Easier altar upgrades |
| Locked chests and doors on higher tiers need Archaic lockpicks (from Cinder's Cradle) | Your old lockpick won't open everything |
| Higher-tier pickaxes deal more damage | A better pickaxe mines faster |

Resources you can't mine — you make them
| Resource | Where | Recipe (pre-1.0) |
|---|---|---|
| Tar | Charcoal Kiln (from the Blacksmith) | 30 wood + 6 dirt → 20 tar (6 min); 1 tar also comes from a burnt-out campfire and burnt food |
| Charcoal | Charcoal Kiln | 17 wood + 3 dirt → 15 charcoal (5 min) |
| Leather | Tanning Station (from the Hunter) | 10 Dried Fur + 20 Salt + 2 Ammonia Gland → 10 leather (15 min) |
| Fabric | Loom | 2 Linen → 1 Fabric; Linen from flax on a spindle (Hand Spindle from the Hunter) |
| Nitrate | Laboratory (from the Alchemist) | Sand + Shroud Sand + Wood Acid + Salt → 5 Nitrate |
| Shroud Core | Alchemist | 10 Shroud Spores + 10 Shroud Liquid; also dropped by Fell bosses at Shroud Roots |
| Fired Brick | Kiln | Lump of Clay + Wood Logs |
Recipe amounts are from Early Access — 1.0 lowered the cost of many recipes, so in-game numbers may be smaller.
Where to find clay (Lump of Clay)
Clay is in Revelwood — big lumps of orange-brown mud in rocks that you break with a pickaxe. Guides point to the area around Thornhold and Diadwyn north of the start, and the terrain southeast of Willow Crush. Fire clay in a Kiln to make bricks, which you need for the Blast Furnace among other things.
Where to find tin (Tin Ore)
Tin is in the Nomad Highlands: in mines and caves, including the Mining Rift west of the Nomad Highlands Ancient Spire, the cave with a Shroud Root north of the tower, and Umber Hollow (in the Shroud). Without tin you can't make bronze (copper + tin) or upgrade the Flame from level 4 to 5.
Where to find iron (Iron Ore)
Iron is in the Kindlewastes — the desert biome in the east. The most recommended spot is Ridgeback Mine southwest of the Kindlewastes Ancient Spire; there are also veins in the caves (Cave Passages). Iron bars are smelted in the Smelter from ore and charcoal, steel in the Blast Furnace from ore and coal.
Where to find amber
Amber is mined from red veins in the Revelwood Shroud — every source points to the area around the Revelwood Ancient Spire (Shroud rifts north, east and south of the tower). To enter the Revelwood Shroud you need the Flame at level 3. Your time in the Shroud is limited — since 1.0, hourglass capsules appear in many places and add about 70% more time.
Where to get resin
Resin comes from trees — chop them with an axe. Big trees and trees with red or orange leaves (typical of Revelwood) drop the most. You need resin from the very start (torches, benches, the first fire spells), so don't throw it away.
Tar — don't look for it in the world
There are no tar deposits. You make tar in a Charcoal Kiln (unlocked by the Blacksmith) from any wood and dirt. A little tar also comes from burnt-out campfires and burnt food.
Sulfur, coal and saltpeter
- Sulfur — bright yellow rocks. The wiki lists the Kindlewastes; some guides also mention the Nomad Highlands (e.g. Ternion Mine).
- Coal — Albaneve Summits, Rothstep Mining Settlement. Don't confuse it with Charcoal, which you make yourself in the Charcoal Kiln and burn in the Smelter.
- There is no saltpeter in Enshrouded — Nitrate, made in the Alchemist's Laboratory, fills that role.
Pickaxe: do you need a better one?
The wiki doesn't say any ore requires a specific pickaxe — a better pickaxe (copper, bronze, iron, steel, gilded) mainly mines faster. In 1.0, higher-tier pickaxes got more damage. Underwater (gold ore in the Veilwater Basin) you mine with the Mining Sieve.
FAQ
Where is the most clay?
In Revelwood — look for big lumps of orange-brown mud in rocks, e.g. around Thornhold and Diadwyn.
Why can't I mine amber?
Amber is in the Revelwood Shroud — to get there and survive, you need the Flame at level 3. Look for red veins in the Shroud rifts around the Revelwood Ancient Spire.
Where do I get tar?
From a Charcoal Kiln: wood + dirt → tar. You won't find it in the world.
Where do I get gold coins in 1.0?
In loot chests all over Embervale — since version 1.0 coins show up from the start of the game. You trade them with survivors, including for vanity items from Mei-Yin Chen.
What resources are in Cinder's Cradle?
The developers didn't list the new biome's resources in the changelog — they describe it as a new crafting tier with new Archaic lockpicks. We'll fill in this section once players reach Cinder's Cradle.
