Does Enshrouded have official mod support?
No. In the FAQ on the game's website, Keen Games answers "Will the game support mods?" like this: "at this stage, we cannot make promises that the game will be moddable, but it is something we would love to implement in the future". So the studio doesn't promise mods, but it doesn't rule them out either.
| What we checked (October 15, 2026) | Result |
|---|---|
| FAQ on enshrouded.com | no promise of mods (quote above) |
| 1.0 changelog and "Launch FAQ" | not a word about mods |
| Steam announcements since April 2026 | not a word about mods |
| Steam Workshop | doesn't exist |
| Game engine | Keen Games' own Holistic Engine — not Unity or Unreal |
Every existing mod is therefore unofficial: players make them, Keen Games doesn't support them, and any game update can break them.
Types of mods
| Type | How it works | Where it runs |
|---|---|---|
| EML mods | Lua scripts in a mods folder; change game data before launch | game and server |
.kfc patchers | a program rewrites the game's or server's data file (e.g. bigger stacks) | game and server; a game update reverts them |
| Cheat Engine tables | change the running game's memory (cheats) | your PC only |
| ReShade presets | image filter: brightness, colors | your PC only |
| World and character saves | ready-made worlds, e.g. with millions of building blocks | like a normal save |
| Tools | mod managers and save backup apps | standalone programs |
EML, Shroudtopia, BepInEx — what loads the mods
- EML (Enshrouded Mod Loader) — the main mod loader. It's a one-person open-source project (Brabb3l) on GitHub, licensed GPL-3.0. The author describes it as a "lua-based mod loader" that for now "only supports asset modifications before the game starts" — a mod changes game data at launch, but can't add new mechanics that run during play. Latest version: v0.1.2 from April 27, 2026 (its
dbghelp.dllhas been downloaded 8,112 times). - Shroudtopia — the older loader. Its latest release is dated February 16, 2026, and the host WinterNode says crashes have been reported since Update 8 (April 2026). Hosts now advise against it in favor of EML. Some mods (e.g. Minimap) still require it.
- BepInEx — a loader for Unity and XNA games ("Unity / XNA game patcher and plugin framework"). Enshrouded runs on its own engine, and Nexus Mods has no BepInEx mods for this game. You don't use it for Enshrouded.
Where to get mods
- Nexus Mods — the main source: 108 Enshrouded mods (October 15, 2026). Each mod page lists the required loader (EML or Shroudtopia), install steps and a bugs tab.
- GitHub — you download EML itself from the author's releases page (github.com/Brabb3l/kfc-parser/releases).
- Thunderstore — Enshrouded isn't there (on October 15, 2026 none of its 343 communities was for this game).
- Steam Workshop — doesn't exist.
Mods are often .dll and .exe files — only download them from Nexus Mods and the author's GitHub, not from random sites.

Two of these mods now duplicate game features: version 1.0 has built-in automatic loot pickup (hold the interact button, or turn it on in the settings), and the altar limit went up to 15 (16 after Flame level 11). The "More ALtars" mod still lists the old limit of 10 altars in its description. Everything else the launch changed is in our version 1.0 guide.
Installing mods in single player (EML), step by step
- Back up your saves. Before 1.0 they live in
%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\enshrouded, from 1.0 inC:\Users\<username>\Saved Games\keen games\Enshrouded\default(more on saves). - Open the game folder: in Steam, right-click Enshrouded → Manage → Browse local files.
- From the EML releases on GitHub, download
dbghelp.dllfrom the latest version and put it in the game folder. If you have the file from an older EML install, replace it. - Create a
modsfolder next to it. Extract each mod into its own subfolder — it must contain amod.jsonfile. - Launch the game. When
eml.jsonappears in the game folder, EML has loaded. - Having trouble with EML in the game? The EML docs suggest using
dinput8.dllinstead ofdbghelp.dll. Ineml.jsonyou can turn on a debug console (enable_console).
Some mods tell you to run emm.exe instead (e.g. emm.exe run -g "game folder" --patch) — always read the instructions on the mod page. On Linux and Steam Deck, add this to the Steam launch options: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dbghelp=native, builtin" %command%.
Uninstalling: delete dbghelp.dll and the mods folder. You undo .kfc patchers by verifying the game files in Steam (Properties → Installed Files).
Mods on a server — your own or rented
Your own dedicated server: the steps are the same, just in the server folder (where enshrouded_server.exe is). Start a Linux server running under Wine/Proton with WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dbghelp=native, builtin". How to set up the server is in our dedicated server guide.
Rented server: two companies from our hosting comparison mention EML directly:
| Company | What the offer page says (October 15, 2026) |
|---|---|
| BisectHosting | "our servers support all your favorite mods and modpacks via Enshrouded Mod Loader (EML)" |
| G-Portal | "Enshrouded Mod Loader — Use this feature in the server settings to add mods" |
Neither publishes step-by-step instructions for Enshrouded. Nitrado and Survival Servers say in their FAQs that they don't support Enshrouded mods. With a host that gives you file access, the usual order is:
- Stop the server and back up the world.
- Upload
dbghelp.dllto the server's root folder via the file manager or FTP. - Upload the
modsfolder with your mods (each in its own subfolder withmod.json). - Start the server and check that
eml.jsonhas appeared.
Do all players need the mods?
It depends on the mod — its page says where it has to be installed.
- Server mods: the EMBER author writes that Enshrouded is "primarily Server authoritative" — a mod on the server works for everyone, whether they have EML or not. If a mod is on both the server and a player's game, the server's values win.
- Partly client-side mods: e.g. More Stack Size works mainly on the server, but a few features also need the mod on the player's side.
- Mods just for you: ReShade, Cheat Engine, Less Dense Shroud Fog ("Client side only") — they only change your game.
Mod authors describe dedicated servers. We found no clear information on how mods behave when a player hosts the world from the in-game menu — it's safest when the host and guests have the same mods.
Mods and version 1.0 — what can break and how to check
After the 1.0 launch (October 15, 2026, 15:00 UTC) some mods will most likely stop working until their authors update them:
.kfcpatchers — every game update replaces the.kfcfiles with the originals, so the changes disappear. Only re-apply a patch once the patcher supports 1.0.- EML mods — they were built on version 0.9 data. The host WinterNode wrote on October 8: "EML and most mods have not been confirmed to work with 1.0 yet".
- Creative Mode — the author says outright that the mod "will most likely stop working when Enshrouded 1.0 is released", and on an unknown game version it switches itself off.
- Saves — 1.0 has a new save format and folder. The game migrates old saves itself (it makes a backup first), but instructions for save-file mods may point to the old paths.
How to check whether a mod works in 1.0:
- On the EML releases page, look for a version newer than v0.1.2 (April 27, 2026) released after October 15, 2026.
- On the mod's Nexus Mods page, check the last update date (after October 15, 2026) and whether the description mentions 1.0.
- Read the comments and bugs tabs — players report quickly what's broken.
- Test on a copy of your world, adding mods one at a time.
The host GameServerKings recommends this order: back up the modded world → remove mods and EML before the update → check that the world loads on clean 1.0 → add mods back one by one once their authors release 1.0 versions.
Risks and backups
- Removing a mod can damage your world: WinterNode warns that after removing a mod that changed items, recipes or structures, parts of the world that rely on it can break.
- Some changes stay in the save: according to GameServerKings, extra chest slots, for example, can remain after you remove the patch.
- Mods come with no guarantee: each one is a single person's work that the author can abandon. Examples from Nexus: Storehouse World has "Unsupported" in its name, and the author of Immersive Embervale archived their mods.
- Back up before every change: copy the whole save folder (game) or the
savegamefolder (server) before you add or remove a mod and before you update the game.
PS5
There are no mods on PS5 and nothing suggests there will be: Keen Games hasn't released modding tools, and every mod on Nexus Mods is a Windows file or program. Version 1.0 also has no crossplay ("Enshrouded will not be cross-platform at launch"), so a PS5 player can't join a modded PC server. More on the console version: Enshrouded on PS5 and Xbox.
FAQ
Does Enshrouded have a Steam Workshop?
No. You get mods from Nexus Mods and the EML loader from the author's GitHub.
Do mods work in version 1.0?
On the morning of launch day (October 15, 2026), neither EML nor any mod had a release marked as 1.0-compatible. Some mods may keep working, others will break until they're updated. Check the mod's update date and EML releases after October 15, 2026.
Do I need the mods to join a modded server?
Usually not — most server mods work for every player. The mod's page describes any exceptions.
Will Keen Games add official mod support after 1.0?
The developers haven't announced it. The FAQ only says it's "something we would love to implement in the future".
Which hosts support Enshrouded mods?
BisectHosting and G-Portal mention the Enshrouded Mod Loader directly. We compare prices and the other providers in our server hosting guide.
How do I remove mods?
Delete dbghelp.dll and the mods folder from the game or server folder. For .kfc patchers, verify the game files in Steam or upload the original .kfc file. Back up your save first.
