These are creator opinions, not facts about the game. We collected and compared them. Hotfixes 1.0.0.2 and 1.0.0.3 did not change combat or skills, so the changes from October 14, 2026 still apply. Some numbers differ between guides, and we flag that in the text.
Warrior or Barbarian: what is the difference
Enshrouded has no classes. You build a warrior or a barbarian from Skill Tree branches and your weapon choice. For an overview of all five builds see the builds overview, and for the order of spending points see the skill tree guide.
- Warrior: a one-handed weapon (sword, axe or mace) and a shield. Less damage, but it defends well. Hack the Minotaur says "you'll be able to block and turtle up as well as a tank".
- Barbarian: a greatsword (two-handed sword) or a two-handed axe. It is about area damage, jumps and fast kills. The weakness is range.
Guides name the defensive branch differently: sometimes Tank, sometimes Guardian. It is the same group of skills (Heavy Plates, Warden, Tower, Earth Aura). Tanking has its own article: tank and healer build.
What 1.0 changed for melee combat
Officially, from the Keen Games changelog of October 14, 2026:
- Stamina now also recovers while blocking.
- Blocking uses the camera direction instead of the direction your character faces, so it should feel more responsive.
- The grappling hook costs less stamina when hooking to an enemy.
- Percentage leech (health, mana, stamina) was rebalanced: it is a flat value in the early game, and percentage leech stays on specific late-game weapons and gear. This hits builds that lived on leech.
- Many skills were moved or repriced, including Veteran and One-Handed Specialization.
- Gem of Battle Mania and Gem of Obsession were weakened.
Heavy melee attacks now hit several enemies at once, as covered in our article on combat and class changes.
1H and shield or two-handed weapon
| 1H + shield (Warrior) | 2H (Barbarian) | |
|---|---|---|
| Style | block, parry, counter | jumps, spins, area damage |
| Specialization | One-Handed Specialization | Two-Handed Specialization |
| Damage bonuses | Warrior's Path (1H only), Swift Blades | Barbarian's Path, Titan Edge, Heavy Handed |
| Defense | high, the shield gives Block and Parry Power | low, you parry with the weapon itself |
| Typical weaknesses | flying enemies, no range | range, slower animations, stamina cost |
| Best for | solo and co-op frontliner | players who want to clear crowds |
Guides give no single answer. In a Reddit thread one player in multiplayer uses "sword and shield basically exclusively" because it is "far more survivable", another says "AoE is king" in this game and plays a 2H build with self-healing, and a third mixes both: 1H for single targets, 2H for crowds and jump attacks. Hack the Minotaur ranks Barbarian above Warrior in an October 18, 2026 video, but that is one author's opinion. The Steam thread "If youre not 2H build, you're support" is a joke, not an argument.
Build 1: Warrior 1H and shield (Hack the Minotaur, October 15, 2026)
Who it is for: solo and co-op when you value survival over damage. The author assumes level 50 and gear level 55.
- Weapon: Vesztah's Mace (Health Leech, blunt damage), shield Crestflame Shield (Block 44, Parry Power 299).
- Armor: Emberguard Helmet, Chestplate and Pants, Wolf's Fang Gloves (one-handed damage), Crestflame Boots.
- Rings and gem: two Commander's Rings, Gem of Retaliation.
- Attributes: Strength first, Constitution second, with a target of 1800 health or more.
| Order | Skill | What it gives |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Double Jump, Merciless Attack | movement and a heavy hit on a stunned enemy |
| 2 | Power Parry, Warrior's Path | faster stun from parrying, 1H damage |
| 3 | Battle Heal | healing on a melee critical hit |
| 4 | One-Handed Specialization | special ability of 1H weapons |
| 5 | Grounding Hook, Veteran | pulls flying enemies down, critical chance |
| 6 | Evasion Attack, Blink | attack after a dodge, escape |
| 7 | Blood Rage, Dessert Stomach | bonus after a kill, fourth food slot |
Progression: early game is Battle Heal and parrying, mid game is Evasion Attack and Blink, and the end game adds Barbarian, Blood Rage and Guardian. When stamina runs out, the author says to switch to a Staff or Wand. Weaknesses: lower damage than the Barbarian and trouble with flying enemies.
Build 2: Barbarian with a greatsword (Hack the Minotaur, October 22, 2026)
Who it is for: solo and co-op when you want area damage. This is the freshest guide we read, written after hotfix 1.0.0.3.
- Weapon: Greatsword of Embers. Backups: Death Gazer Axe, the Devilish Bow or a staff.
- Armor: the Emberguard set, with Vorgoth's Soulbound Boots (+10% greatsword damage, awarded after the final boss). Sunpiercer before that.
- Ring and gem: Ancient Ring of Health, Gem of Bleeding.
| Order | Skill | What it gives |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Double Jump, Merciless Attack | movement, hit on a stunned enemy |
| 2 | Battle Heal, Heavy Handed | healing, stun when attacking into a block |
| 3 | Barbarian's Path, Two-Handed Specialization | 2H damage and special ability |
| 4 | Crash Down Attack, Upwards Slash Attack | jump attack, answer to flying enemies |
| 5 | Titan Edge | greatsword damage |
| 6 | Whirlwind Crescendo | 360-degree spin at the end of a chain |
| 7 | Blood Rage, Relentless | bonus after a kill |
The author puts Upwards Slash Attack at 25 stamina, and PinDrop puts Whirlwind Crescendo at 75. Sources differ on how many hits it takes to trigger the spin: three or four. Weaknesses: range, so the author suggests a bow with Stun Arrows for bosses, and a high stamina cost.
Build 3: Berserker Barbarian (PinDrop, October 17, 2026)
Who it is for: early and mid game. This is a short 58-point build, complete around level 30, not an end-game one. PinDrop reads the 1.0 game files.
- Key skills: Titan Edge, Slasher, Blood Rage, Veteran, Relentless, Whirlwind Crescendo, Two-Handed Specialization, Heavy Handed.
- Weapons and armor: Ornate Greatsword and Guard Of The North Sword (the author marks these as likely matches), the Rising Fighter and Sunpiercer sets.
- Hammer variant: move the Titan Edge and Slasher ranks into Barbarian's Path and Brute.
- Note: the build relies on Battle Heal for sustain. After 58 points PinDrop suggests investing in Constitution.
Battle Heal and Blood Rage values differ between guides (the sources give different percentages), so check the in-game description. The strength of this build is that it is cheap in points and quick to assemble.
Build 4: End-game 1H juggernaut (04AM, October 20, 2026)
Who it is for: a max-level player who wants a crit-focused one-handed warrior. The video shows a 203-point build.
- Weapon: Molten Axe (cutting, fire, crit). Gem: Gem of Armoring (brief damage resistance after a kill).
- Armor: Emberguard and Crestflame, with two Rings of the Ancients instead of survivability rings.
- Skills: Opportunity (three ranks), Merciless Attack, Swift Blades, Battle Heal, Guardian (Earth Aura, Warden, Tower), Evasion Attack with Blink and Emergency Blink.
- Result according to the author: about 150% melee damage and almost 20% crit chance. The build is tuned for the constructs in Cinder's Cradle.
This is a juggernaut rather than a classic tank: you kill fast instead of drawing enemy attention.
Skills that help both styles
- Survivor: Dessert Stomach (fourth food slot), Good Metabolism, Rebound and Runner.
- Flying enemies: Grounding Hook, Giant Slayer Hook, Upwards Slash Attack or a bow with stun arrows. Officially, stun arrows and shock damage now work significantly better, which helps against the Fell Dragon Youngling.
- Kick: fills the stun bar. Players report that most enemies need one or two kicks.
FAQ
Is a 2h build better than sword and shield?
There is no official ranking. Hack the Minotaur ranks Barbarian above Warrior, while Reddit players are split and many mix both styles. For more on ratings, see the build tier list.
What changed in blocking and stamina in 1.0?
Stamina regenerates while blocking, blocks follow the camera direction, and the hook to an enemy is cheaper. Details are in the section on changes above.
What gear should a barbarian or warrior use in 1.0?
Creators recommend the Emberguard set (Blacksmith, after Cinder's Cradle), with Sunpiercer before it. You get Vorgoth's Soulbound Boots after the final boss. For the full picture see weapons and armor.
Does Battle Heal still work?
Yes, it heals on a melee critical hit and scales with maximum health. Sources give different healing values, so we do not quote a single number.
How do I deal with flying enemies?
Grounding Hook, Giant Slayer Hook, Upwards Slash Attack or a bow. If you prefer magic, see the mage build and the archer build.
