The Paladin at a glance: who it is for
The Paladin wears plate armor and, along with the Druid, is the only class that can fill all three roles. Blizzard describes it after the changes as "highly effective tanks, competitive damage dealers, and the strongest single-target healers in the game". Its weaknesses: limited range, no interrupt and no way to slow enemies. On the other hand, it is very strong against Undead and Demons.
It is a good pick if you want to level safely in melee and then tank or heal in groups.
| Spec | Wowhead (level 30) | Mobalytics (level 30) | Conquest Capped (level 60 forecast) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protection (tank) | S, October 6, 2026 | A, October 13, 2026 | S (shared with Protection Warrior) |
| Retribution (DPS) | A, October 8, 2026 | B, October 12, 2026 | A |
| Holy (healer) | B, October 6, 2026 | no list | A |
For leveling, Mobalytics (levels 1–20, checked October 18, 2026) gives the Paladin an A, while an earlier version of the same list had it at S. Conquest Capped gives it a B: "the most comfortable melee class to level, just not the fastest".
The Forever Open was played on the Horde only, so every Paladin in it was Undead. In the qualifiers, Paladins won 63% of their fights and Retribution 65%, the best of any spec. Players point out that the format helped: one fight per match, with long cooldowns resetting between duels.
The Holy Paladin is disputed. Blizzard promises the best single-target healing, while Wowhead ranks it last among healers at level 30 (B). At 30 it still lacks the Light's Vigil talent, which arrives at level 40.
Specs: Holy, Protection and Retribution
| Spec | Role | Playstyle in Forever |
|---|---|---|
| Holy | healer | the strongest single-target healing (Flash of Light, Holy Light), Holy Shock every 10 sec, Light's Vigil at 31 points for party healing; a hybrid "Shockadin" dealing Holy damage is possible |
| Protection | tank | Seal of Fury with Judgement as a taunt, Consecration for groups of enemies, Swift Judgement and Templar's Bulwark cooldowns, mana from shield blocks |
| Retribution | melee DPS | two-handed weapon, Holy Strike, Judgement and Seal of Command; at 31 points seal twisting through Twist of Light, or a hybrid with Holy Shock |
What's new in Forever (as of October 15, 2026)
The key changes from Blizzard's October 15, 2026 article and that week's beta notes:
- Holy Strike (new, level 6): an instant Holy strike for 50% of weapon damage plus a bonus that grows with rank.
- Seal of Fury (new seal, level 10, rank 3 at 26): adds Holy damage to every hit, so tanks prefer a fast weapon. It grants an absorb shield (according to Wowhead only with a shield equipped). Judging this seal taunts the target from 10 yards. Since October 15, Power Word: Shield no longer overwrites it.
- Judgement no longer consumes your seal.
- Consecration is baseline from level 20, and only the first 4 targets take full damage. On October 15 its Spell Power coefficient per tick dropped from 0.095 to 0.042.
- Holy Shock is now a 21-point talent (was 31) with a 10 sec cooldown (was 30 sec).
- Blessings last 60 minutes, and Blessing of Kings is baseline. Salvation is no longer a Blessing, and the new Revoke removes it from a chosen party member.
- Lay on Hands has a 20-minute cooldown instead of an hour.
- Classic seal twisting is not baseline: the Twist of Light talent replaces it.
October 15 also toned down spell damage: Seal of Righteousness benefited from Spell Damage almost twice as much as intended, and Champion of the Light now gives 10/20/30% of Intellect (was 20/40/60%). A bug in Infusion of Light that gave Holy Shock +50% damage against enemies was fixed as well.
Righteous Fury is disputed: Blizzard's article mentions a reduced threat bonus, while the October 15 notes raise the threat from Holy damage to 90% (was 60%). Wowhead and Icy Veins guides were written between September 20 and October 10, 2026, so some of their numbers are out of date.
Races: Human, Dwarf and the Undead Paladin
On the Alliance side you can play a Paladin as a Human or a Dwarf. The Horde gets Paladins for the first time, but only as Undead, with their own Forsaken mounts.
| Race | Faction | What it gives a Paladin (after October 16, 2026) | Recommended by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Human | Alliance | Will to Survive removes stuns, Ruthless +2% crit chance, The Human Spirit +5% Spirit | Conquest Capped (PvE), Wowhead |
| Dwarf | Alliance | Stoneform (immunity to bleeds, poisons and diseases, −10% physical damage taken), Earth Fury | Conquest Capped (PvP, tanking) |
| Undead | Horde | Will of the Forsaken (fear, charm, sleep), Cannibalize (health and mana), Touch of the Grave (20% chance) | the only Horde option; Conquest Capped: best for leveling |
On October 16, 2026, Blizzard removed weapon-type bonuses: Humans have Ruthless instead of Sword Specialization, and Dwarves have Earth Fury instead of Mace Specialization. Advice like "Human with a sword, Dwarf with a mace" is out of date, and there are no new race rankings yet. Details: races and Skyborne.
Paladin leveling: Retribution or Protection
The sources agree on two things: play Retribution up to level 20, and leave Holy for later. After 20, opinions split:
- For Retribution: Conquest Capped (October 13, 2026) calls it the simplest choice: it kills single targets quickly with a slow two-handed weapon, and Pursuit of Justice saves hours of running. YouTuber WillE: "one of the better levelers in the game".
- For Protection: a popular Reddit post (October 12, 2026) calls Prot after 20 "one of the best leveling specs in forever": several mobs at once and almost no downtime. Wowhead (Riyani, October 6) warns that the road to 20 "is not paved with roses", but at 30 Prot with sword and board handles the open world better than Ret.
In short: Ret is simpler and strong on single targets, but rests more often. Prot from level 20 pulls several mobs at once. You can change talents at your class trainer in a capital city.
Talent build up to level 30
You get talents from level 10, one point per level, so you have 21 points at 30. The Wowhead builds were made before the October 15, 2026 Champion of the Light nerf.
Retribution 0/0/21 (Wowhead, Surveillant, October 10, 2026), Wowhead talent calculator:
- Levels 10–14: Benediction.
- 15–16: Improved Judgement.
- 17–19: Conviction.
- 20–22: Sanctified Judgement.
- 23: Seal of Command.
- 24–25: Pursuit of Justice.
- 26: Sacred Arbiter.
- 27–28: Conviction (5/5).
- 29: Holy Conduit.
- 30: Vengeance.
Protection 0/21/0 (Wowhead, Riyani, October 6, 2026), Wowhead talent calculator: Redoubt (10–14), Precision (15–17), Anticipation (18–19), Improved Seal of Fury (20), Shield Specialization (21–23), Improved Righteous Fury (24), One-Handed Weapon Specialization (25–27), Sacred Duty (28–29), Templar's Bulwark (30).
Holy 21/0/0 (Wowhead, Harreks, October 6, 2026): Wowhead talent calculator.
The Legacy perk "Talented" gives up to 5 extra points, and Wowhead has separate versions of the builds for it. For levels 31–60, Conquest Capped plans Ret around Two-Handed Weapon Specialization, Champion of the Light and Twist of Light. How milestones work: talents.
Rotation in plain words
Retribution (Wowhead, level 30):
- Keep a seal up: Seal of Command with a slow two-handed weapon, Seal of Righteousness with anything else.
- Judgement whenever it is ready.
- Holy Strike whenever it is ready.
- Consecration only on 3–4 or more enemies, because it costs a lot of mana.
- Exorcism on Undead and Demons, Hammer of Justice on a dangerous enemy.
Protection: keep Seal of Fury up at all times. On a single target: Judgement, Exorcism (Undead and Demons), Holy Strike, and Consecration if mana allows. On several targets, start with Consecration.
Holy: Judgement with Seal of Light on an enemy, Holy Shock, then Flash of Light (fast and cheap) or Holy Light (slower, pricier, big heal).
Key abilities and levels
| Level | What you get |
|---|---|
| 6 | Holy Strike |
| 10 | Seal of Fury, first talents |
| 16 | Retribution Aura and Righteous Fury (Wowhead): tanks hold threat reliably |
| 20 | Consecration, Blessing of Kings; 11-point talent (Voice of Truth, Improved Seal of Fury) |
| 25 | 16-point talent: Divine Favor, Swift Judgement or Sacred Arbiter |
| 26 | Seal of Fury rank 3, Salvation |
| 30 | 21-point talent: Holy Shock, Templar's Bulwark or Repentance |
| 40 | Dual Specialization; 31-point talent: Light's Vigil or Twist of Light |
Milestone talent levels are counted without the Legacy perk.
Stats
- Retribution: weapon DPS first, then Spell Power and Strength (Wowhead), because Ret is "very reliant on stacking spell power via gear". The two-handed weapon should be slow: around 3.0 or slower (Wowhead), 3.2 or more (Conquest Capped).
- Protection: a fast one-handed weapon and a shield. Before level 20, do not equip weapons with Spell Power (Wowhead).
- Holy: items with "+healing"; Intellect only gives mana and spell crit. Plate healing gear will not have Hit, the Divine Precision talent provides it.
Strengths and weaknesses
Solo: Ret is very safe with little downtime (Conquest Capped), and when things go wrong you have Lay on Hands, Blessing of Protection and Divine Shield. Downsides: a small mana pool and no big damage cooldown. Players rate Holy as the worst for leveling: "big mana problems, not that big heals" (Reddit).
Groups: Protection is the strongest tank at 30 according to Wowhead, and Templar's Bulwark "essentially makes you immortal for 8 seconds in a dungeon". Without items or Engineering bombs, though, you cannot pull enemies from range. Ret brings blessings, auras and Cleanse, and Fire, Frost and Shadow Resistance Aura affect the whole raid.
PvP: according to Conquest Capped, the Holy Paladin is one of the healers that groups are built around, while Ret struggles without a healer. WillE recommends Holy and Ret for PvP and considers Prot too weak. Mobalytics rates the Paladin C in level 30 duels, even though it came first in the Forever Open.
Professions
Wowhead and Conquest Capped recommend Mining and Blacksmithing. In camping, some profession add-ons work like Paladin blessings and do not stack with them:
| Add-on | Profession | Works like |
|---|---|---|
| Lodestone | Mining | Blessing of Might |
| Fish Bowl | Fishing | Blessing of Kings |
| Mana Well | Alchemy | Blessing of Wisdom |
| Sharpening Wheel | Blacksmithing | Strength bonus |
| Camp Chair | Skinning | +2% crit chance |
A campfire holds 3 add-ons, each player adds one, and the cooldown is shared and lasts one hour.
First steps
- Choose a race: Undead on the Horde side, Human or Dwarf on the Alliance side.
- The Undead Paladin starts in Tirisfal Glades. According to unconfirmed beta reports, around level 10 you are sent to Bandarion Keep in Whispering Wood, a new location in Tirisfal with your class quests.
- At level 6 learn Holy Strike, at 10 Seal of Fury, and spend your first talent point.
- Do dungeon quests, such as the "A Strange Artifact" chain with the Cloak of the Divine Storm reward (Wowhead). There is also a new dungeon for this level range, Excavation Site: Wetlands: new dungeons.
The class mount is disputed. In Classic, Paladins got the Warhorse at 40 and the epic Charger at 60. Conquest Capped mentions a "Charger at 40", while another guide describes an epic Forsaken Charger at 60 for the Undead. We have not confirmed the Warhorse level in Forever.
Compare the Paladin with other classes in the tier lists, and check the racials before picking a race.
