In short
- No cookies, ads, accounts or forms. We do not know your name or e-mail address (unless you write to us yourself).
- Server logs: IP address with the last part cut off, time, page address, browser — deleted after 14 days.
- Visitor statistics (GoatCounter on our own server): no cookies and nothing stored on your device, the IP address is not stored; only aggregate numbers remain (e.g. how many visits a page had on a given day) — for 2 years.
- Game covers load directly from Steam's servers (Valve) — your browser then connects to their server.
- The language you choose is remembered by your browser and is not sent to us.

What data, why, and on what legal basis
1. Server logs (every visit)
For every request, the web server records:
- the IP address with the last part masked — in IPv4 the last number is replaced with 0, in IPv6 the last 80 bits are cut off (we do not store the full address),
- the date and time,
- the address of the requested page — the path only, without query parameters; we do not record the address of the page the request came from,
- the browser and system (the so-called user agent), the server response code and the response size.
Why: security and operation of the site — detecting attacks and abuse, finding errors. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (our legitimate interest: a secure and working site). How long: 14 days, then the logs are deleted automatically.
2. Game covers and thumbnails (Steam servers)
The covers and thumbnails of games in the calendar, the rankings and on game pages are not on our server — your browser fetches them directly from the servers of Valve Corporation (Steam, address shared.akamai.steamstatic.com, the Akamai network). When it does, Valve's server receives, as with any connection, your IP address and information about your browser. We do not send it the address of the page you are viewing (the images have the referrer header turned off), and we do not pass any other data to Valve.
Why: to show the official artwork of games without copying it to our server. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (our legitimate interest: a clear calendar with official artwork). Valve is responsible for what happens to data on its servers — its rules are described in Valve's privacy policy. Valve is based in the USA, so this data may go outside the European Economic Area. If you do not want that, you can block images from the steamstatic.com domain in your browser — the calendar and rankings keep working, just without covers.
3. Browser storage (localStorage — this is not cookies)
When you choose a language, the page remembers it on your device so that the next time you visit it opens the site in that language straight away. This entry stays only in your browser and is never sent to our server. The site search also works in your browser: it downloads a list of pages from our server, and the words you type are not sent anywhere.
This storage is strictly necessary for the feature you ask for (remembering the language you chose), so it does not require consent (Art. 399(3) of the Polish Electronic Communications Law (Prawo komunikacji elektronicznej)). You can delete it by clearing this site's data in your browser settings.
4. E-mail messages
If you write to us, we process your e-mail address and the content of your message to reply and handle the matter (for example to fix an error or consider a complaint). Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (answering your message). How long: until the matter is settled, and after that as long as needed to defend against possible claims related to it.
5. Visitor statistics (GoatCounter)
To know which pages and language versions people read and where readers come from, we count visits with GoatCounter (open-source software). It runs on our own server at stats.afktimes.com — the counter script is loaded from there too. The data does not go to the program's authors or to any analytics company.
What we store — only aggregate numbers per hour or per day, e.g. "/en/releases/, 10 October, Firefox 140: 4 visits":
- the address of the page you visited (without parameters) and its title,
- the page you came from (referrer) — the address only, without parameters; search engines grouped, e.g. "Google"; if the address contains a source tag (e.g.
utm_source=chatgpt.com, which some sites add), we store only its value as the source, - the browser and system name and version (read from the user agent header; the header itself is not stored),
- the screen width,
- the country (determined from the shortened IP address; no region or city).
Each of these counts is kept separately, so they cannot be linked to each other or to a specific person (for example, there is no way to tell whether the person with a 1920-pixel-wide screen was using Firefox). We do not store individual visits — that option of the counter is turned off.
- No cookies and nothing stored on your device. The counter stores nothing in your browser (no cookies, no localStorage) and does not give you any identifier.
- The IP address is not stored. Our web server passes the counter an address that is already shortened (as in the logs — point 1). The counter uses it only at the moment of the visit: to determine the country and to recognise a repeat visit.
- How we count unique visits. From the site identifier, the user agent header and the shortened IP address, the counter builds a key in RAM and assigns it a random number. For 8 hours after the last page view, further views of the same page (e.g. a reload) count as one visit, and the first view of any other page counts as a visit to that page. The key and the random number exist only in RAM: they never go to the database or to disk (they are deleted when the counter restarts), and they disappear after 8 hours without activity.
- Bots (search engines, scanners) are not counted in the statistics. The counter sets their requests aside separately (page address, bot user agent, time) and deletes them after 30 days.
Why: to know which content is needed and to improve the site. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (our legitimate interest: measuring the audience of our own site in the least privacy-invasive way). How long: aggregate statistics for 2 years (730 days) — the counter deletes older data automatically; the counter's server logs as in point 1 (shortened IP, 14 days). Who receives it: no one — the data stays on our server (its provider, OVH, is described below); we do not pass it on to third parties.
How to opt out: open (or reload) any page of the site with #toggle-goatcounter added to the end of the address, e.g. https://afktimes.com/en/#toggle-goatcounter. The counter will stop counting your visits in that browser and will remember this in the browser's localStorage — this is the counter's only entry on your device, and it is created only at your request; opening such an address again turns counting back on. Turning off JavaScript or using an ad blocker also stops the counting.
No cookies or ads
We do not use cookies, advertising pixels or third-party scripts. The only statistics script is the GoatCounter counter served from our own server (point 5) — no cookies and nothing stored on your device. Fonts and icons load from our own server (no Google Fonts). The only files from outside our server are game covers from Steam's servers (point 2). We do not profile you and we do not make automated decisions about you.
Recipients of data
- OVH (OVHcloud) — provider of the VPS server in the European Union (Gravelines, France). It processes data on our behalf as a processor, only to the extent needed to maintain the server.
- Valve Corporation (Steam) — only to the extent described in point 2: the server hosting the game covers sees your IP address and browser when your browser fetches an image.
Visitor statistics (point 5) are counted by GoatCounter installed on our own server — they go neither to the program's authors nor to any analytics company.
We do not sell data and do not share it with anyone else. Our server is in the European Union and we do not ourselves transfer data outside the European Economic Area; the only connection to a company outside the EEA is the fetching of game covers from Valve's servers described above.
How long we keep data
| Data | Time |
|---|---|
| Server logs (with shortened IP) | 14 days |
| Visitor statistics (aggregate numbers only, no IP) | 2 years (730 days), then deleted automatically |
| Recognising a repeat visit (shortened IP + browser) | only in RAM, up to 8 hours after the last page view, not stored |
| Bot requests (page address, bot user agent, time) | 30 days |
| Browser storage (the language you chose) | until you clear it (it exists only on your device) |
| E-mails to us | until the matter is settled and any related claims are resolved |
Your rights
You have the right to:
- access your data and get a copy (Art. 15 GDPR),
- rectification of data (Art. 16),
- erasure of data (Art. 17),
- restriction of processing (Art. 18),
- object to processing based on our legitimate interest (Art. 21).
Write to kontakt@afktimes.com. Logs have a shortened IP address, so it is usually not possible to identify a specific person in them. If you want to use your rights regarding logs, give the approximate time of your visit and the pages you visited; without such details we may not be able to identify you (Art. 11 GDPR). Visitor statistics are aggregate and nobody can be identified in them; you can switch off the counting of your own visits yourself at any time (point 5) — that is the simplest way to object.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the President of the Personal Data Protection Office (Prezes Urzędu Ochrony Danych Osobowych, UODO), ul. Stawki 2, 00-193 Warszawa, Poland, or with the supervisory authority in the EU country where you live or work.
