What is the max level in 1.0
Keen Games confirms in the 1.0 changelog: the player level cap is 50, and gear upgrades to level 55. The 55 is an equipment ceiling, not a character level. Before 1.0 the cap was 45 (according to guides), so you gain five levels.
How much XP do you need for 50? The developers don't say. One site (GamingBolt) calculates about 429 thousand XP, but it doesn't show its math and nobody confirms it. Fan-made XP-per-level tables also contradict each other, so we don't quote any of them.
Character level is not the same as the Flame level (Strengthen the Flame). The Flame level needs materials and opens more dangerous Shroud and more altars. No source says the Flame changes how fast you gain XP.
Where XP comes from
The world menu has three XP sliders (combat, mining, quests and exploration), which shows that the game counts XP in those groups. Here is what gives the most.
| Source | XP | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Quests | 5 to 3,200 XP | typically 75-1,000 according to AllThingsHow; in total 45,450 XP (iTechGuides, 153 quests) or 49,825 XP (Pindrop, 171 quests) |
| Discovering locations | 25 to 1,000 XP | typically 125-500 (AllThingsHow) |
| Item sets | 50 to 2,200 XP | 126 sets, 48,925 XP in total (Pindrop and iTechGuides agree) |
| Mining ore | 4 to 12 XP each | table below |
| Combat | base 50 XP, multiplier 0.1-1.9 | depends on the level difference (iTechGuides, AllThingsHow) |
| Experience Scroll | 100 XP | flat; sources don't say where to get one |
A few one-time rewards from AllThingsHow: freeing the Blacksmith gives 1,400 XP, entering his vault 400 XP, and destroying the Shroud Root at the Springlands Elixir Well 225 XP. The biggest single quest rewards are 3,200 XP.
In 1.0 the first level-up was moved to placing your first Flame Altar, and the second should come after you free the Blacksmith.
Mining: XP per ore
Mining is the steadiest XP source, and each piece counts separately. You don't have to empty a whole vein, but the longer you dig, the more you collect. Values according to GamingBolt:
| XP each | Resources |
|---|---|
| 12 | Celestium Ore, Diamond |
| 10 | Amber, Amethyst, Aquamarine, Flintstone, Gold Ore, Iron Ore, Lapislazuli, Mother-Of-Pearl, Silver Ore, Sulfur, Tin Ore |
| 9 | Copper Ore |
| 8 | Obsidian, Red Marble Fragment |
| 7 | Fossilized Bone |
| 5 | Coal, Salt |
| 4 | Lump of Clay |
AllThingsHow agrees on Sulfur, Tin Ore, Copper Ore, Fossilized Bone and Clay. Stone, Dirt, Rubble, Mycelium and Luminous Growth give no XP, but they cost Stamina. Resources inside a Flame Altar's range don't respawn, so place your altar before you enter the mine, but so that the vein stays outside its area. Bring a few spare pickaxes, because they break quickly.
Combat
According to iTechGuides, GamingBolt and Gamer.org, enemy XP changes by about 10% per level of difference: +10% for each enemy level above yours (up to +90%) and -10% for each below. The range is 0.1 to 1.9 times the base value. The best targets are Fells, elites and bosses. One example: killing a Fell Thunderbrute gave +150 XP (AllThingsHow).
Players on Steam disagree on whether mining scales with your level. The 1.0 guides say ore gives the same XP at every level.
XP sliders in the world settings
This is an official menu option, not a workaround. Before loading a world, choose Edit > Custom difficulty (GameRant), and you can also change it after creating the world (a Steam player). There are three separate sliders:
- Combat XP,
- Mining XP,
- Quest & Exploration XP.
According to iTechGuides each one runs from 25% to 200% (the wiki lists 0% for mining, so sources differ here). On top of that comes Enemy Amount: more enemies means more combat XP. Players warn, though, that you won't get Diablo-like speed. One of them writes that even at 200% XP and the maximum number of enemies, leveling slows around levels 20-22 to roughly one level per 2-3 hours (one player's opinion).
Co-op: is XP shared
Keen Games doesn't publish co-op XP rules. Fan roundups (iTechGuides, GamingBolt) describe a 5% drop in combat XP for each extra player: two players get 95%, four get 85%, seven get 70%, and from nine players it bottoms out at 60%. The developers have not confirmed this. What we do know from the changelog is that the Automatic option scales the number of enemies to the number of players nearby (every active player in the area counts). More on playing with others: playing with friends.
Best spots by stage of the game
For levels 36-50 there are no proven spots with confirmed XP numbers. Below is what the 1.0 guides recommend.
| Stage | Spot | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Levels 1-15 | Springlands | a dedicated grind is usually unnecessary: finish early quests, explore, destroy Shroud Roots (Gamer.org) |
| Around 10-15 | Mark of Sameth mine (Revelwood) | Copper Ore and several groups of Scavengers; enemies first, then mining. Guides give the entry level differently: 10-13 (AllThingsHow) or 11-15 (Gamer.org) |
| Around 16-35 | Kindlewastes, the Iron Ore vein by the mine | a whole vein is about 3,000-6,000 XP depending on world settings (GameRant, Gamer.org); no Deadly Shroud, so you need no Flame upgrades |
| Around 16-35 | Kindlewastes, Sulfur clusters | 10 XP each, east of the Ancient Spire |
| Levels 36-50 | Albaneve Summits, Veilwater Basin, Cinder's Cradle | no confirmed numbers; GamingBolt advises fighting enemies above your level and still calls mining the most dependable |
To reach Mark of Sameth: teleport to the Ancient Spire in Revelwood and glide west (Pro-Gamer.fr). Moving through the map in order is covered in map and biomes, and the first hours of the game in the beginner guide.
What does NOT give XP
- Building and crafting. According to Gamer.org there is no reliable XP method from building.
- Rested. The Rested state gives more Stamina and faster Stamina regeneration, not XP (wiki.gg). It helps indirectly: food, water and Rested give nearly two full Stamina bars before a mining run (AllThingsHow).
- Food. No source documents an XP bonus from food. It only gives temporary stat bonuses.
- Stone, dirt, Mycelium. Mining them gives no XP, although Mycelium is sometimes needed for the Flame.
Skill points are not XP
Players mix these two up. According to Pindrop (data from the game files), at level 50 you have 212 skill points: 98 from levels (2 per level-up), 60 from Shroud Roots (1 each) and 54 from Elixir Wells (3 each). More on spending them: skill tree.
The 1.0 guides (Gamer.org, Mobalytics) say the reward for a Shroud Root and an Elixir Well is granted once per character, not once per world. We haven't verified this in the game yet. Roots respawn with enemies roughly every 5 in-game days, but you only get the points the first time.
A practical plan
- Set the XP sliders and enemy amount to match how you want to play.
- Do story quests early and destroy Shroud Roots to get skill points.
- Discover locations and climb Ancient Spires (XP for discovery and fast travel points).
- Collect item sets, because they are the second biggest source after quests.
- Bring spare pickaxes to the mine, place an altar next to it, and when you return to base check whether you need the ore for a Flame upgrade.
- Fight enemies stronger than you if your gear allows it.
Player questions
