Who the Shaman is for
Blizzard describes Shamans as "masters of totems": they use totems to buff, heal and solve problems for their group. A Shaman can play melee DPS, spell DPS or healer. It wears mail and a shield, which makes it one of the sturdiest classes. Blizzard also names the weakness: no effective crowd control.
In Forever, for the first time in Classic, the Shaman is in both factions: the Horde has it as before, and the Alliance gets the Dwarf Shaman. According to Wowhead, every melee group in a raid will need a Shaman with Windfury Totem.
Tier list placement
This is a beta capped at level 30, and balance changes every week. None of these lists is official.
| Source | Date and level | Enhancement | Elemental | Restoration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wowhead (Riyani) | 8.10.2026 (DPS), 6.10.2026 (healer), level 30 | S | B | A |
| Mobalytics (Crix) | 12.10.2026, level 30 | A | C | no healer list |
| Conquest Capped (Kir) | 13.10.2026, level 60 forecast | A | D | S |
For leveling 1–20, Mobalytics gives the whole class A (checked October 18, 2026), behind Hunter and Warlock. Every class compared: best class to start with.
Specializations
| Specialization | Role | How it plays | For a new player |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elemental Combat (Wowhead calculator: Elemental) | ranged DPS | Lightning Bolt, Lava Burst, Shocks and Fire Nova | weak for leveling, lowest on tier lists |
| Enhancement | melee DPS | two-handed weapon or one-hander with a shield, Stormstrike, Maelstrom Weapon, totems | recommended by every guide |
| Restoration | healer | Chain Heal, Healing Wave, the new Riptide, Water Shield | great in a group, weak solo |
The Shaman in Forever cannot dual wield. Two-handed axes and maces no longer require a talent, so every specialization can use them (Zockify).
What is new in Forever
The Shaman got a lot of changes in Forever. The most important ones, according to Blizzard:
- Totems: 1 sec GCD (was 1.5 sec), totems with a lasting buff last 5 minutes (was 2), base range 30 yd. A bar tracks your totems, and right-clicking removes one.
- Call of the Elements (level 20) drops 4 totems with a single 3 sec cast. The Call of the Ancestors and Call of the Spirits sets come later.
- Totemic Recall (level 20) picks up your totems and returns 25% mana. Totemic Projection (level 22) moves your active totems to a spot up to 30 yd away, 1 min cooldown.
- Weapon imbues (Windfury, Flametongue, Frostbrand, Rockbiter Weapon) last 60 minutes (was 5) and stack with sharpening stones and Wizard Oil.
- Fire Nova is now a spell (level 12): it explodes around your active fire totem, 10 sec cooldown. Fire Nova Totem was removed.
- Windfury Totem and Flametongue Totem are party buffs, not weapon enchants. Tranquil Air Totem was removed.
- Lightning Bolt (rank 4 and up) is a 2.5 sec cast and Chain Lightning 2 sec, but damage coefficients went down.
- New talents: Lava Burst, Riptide and Rage of the Farseer, a personal take on Bloodlust: +30% attack speed for 25 sec, 3 min cooldown.
The October 15, 2026 beta build added more. Elemental Mastery is back as a 31-point talent (−0.5 sec cast time on Lightning Bolt and Lava Burst, no Chain Lightning cooldown for 15 sec). Lava Burst is now a 21-point talent with no prerequisite. Fire Nova was heavily nerfed but got cheaper, and Chain Lightning costs about 35% less. Grace of Air, Strength of Earth, Windfury and Flametongue Totem now affect the whole raid. Windfury and Flametongue Totem still exclude each other, but Grace of Air now works with both.
Most Shaman guides, including Blizzard's article from October 7, 2026, were written before these changes. Up-to-date ones include Wowhead Enhancement (October 17), Mobalytics (October 16) and Conquest Capped.
Races
On the Alliance side the Shaman is Dwarf only (a new combination). On the Horde side you can play it as an Orc, Tauren, Troll or Windshaper Skyborne (paid race).
| Race | Faction | What it gives a Shaman | What guides say |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orc | Horde | Savage +1% crit, Blood Fury +10% Attack Power and Spell Power for 15 sec (3 min cooldown) | Wowhead: "golden standard", best for PvE and PvP |
| Troll | Horde | Berserking +10% haste for 10 sec, in-combat Regeneration | Mobalytics: second after Orc |
| Tauren | Horde | Endurance +5% health and a crit bonus (value disputed), War Stomp | Mobalytics: third |
| Windshaper Skyborne | Horde | Wind Blessed +3% haste, +5% damage against Elementals | Mobalytics: fourth (for raw DPS) |
| Dwarf | Alliance | Earth Fury (crit bonus, value disputed), +5% damage against Beasts, Stoneform | Wowhead: one of the weakest choices for Enhancement, but the only one on the Alliance side |
Mobalytics (October 16, 2026) also lists Skyborne on the Alliance side. Blizzard's official table from September 22, 2026, Wowhead and Icy Veins do not confirm this: High Order Skyborne can play Mage, not Shaman. We assume the Alliance Shaman is Dwarf only.
Blizzard reworked racials in mid-October 2026, so older guides describe outdated bonuses. Full values and disputed numbers: races and Skyborne.
Shaman leveling and build
For leveling, pick Enhancement. Wowhead: "Enhancement looks to be a very strong leveling spec", because it relies on weapon attacks and saves mana. A Reddit player who reached level 30 in the beta calls Elemental "a mistake" and Restoration "bad for leveling, fantastic for healing".
Enhancement 0/21/0 build for level 30, according to Wowhead (Yebb, October 17, 2026):
| Level | Talent |
|---|---|
| 10–14 | Thundering Strikes 1–5 |
| 15–17 | Mental Dexterity 1–3 |
| 18–19 | Improved Ghost Wolf 1–2 |
| 20 | Shamanistic Focus |
| 21–23 | Elemental Weapons 1–3 |
| 24 | Anticipation 1 |
| 25 | Stormstrike |
| 26–29 | Flurry 1–4 |
| 30 | Improved Stormstrike 1 |
Wowhead spends Legacy points on Spirit Weapons and Mental Quickness, among others, and advises against Maelstrom Weapon until you can take 5/5. WillE calls Improved Ghost Wolf (Ghost Wolf indoors, then instant) two mandatory points in every specialization.
Check the build in the Wowhead Shaman talent calculator. Elemental and Restoration builds from guides dated October 6–7, 2026 may not load after the October 15 tree rework. How talents and Legacy work: talents.
Rotation in plain words
Enhancement: pull the mob with a Shock or Lightning Bolt, then hit it with your weapon. Wowhead: "Enhancement Shamans are mostly reliant on their auto attacks". Use Stormstrike (8 sec cooldown) only now and then to save mana. Refresh Lightning Shield between fights. Against several enemies, drop Searing Totem and use Fire Nova while your mana lasts.
Elemental: WillE sums it up like this: totems down, Flame Shock on the target, Lava Burst on cooldown, and filler spells in between. At level 30, however, Wowhead advised fighting with a weapon with Windfury Weapon plus Shocks, because Lightning Bolt has low base damage. That advice predates the Fire Nova nerf.
Restoration: in a dungeon, drop support totems (such as Strength of Earth), heal badly hurt players with Healing Wave, especially the tank, and when nobody is taking much damage, add Searing Totem and Fire Nova. At 60 the toolkit is Chain Heal, Healing Wave and Riptide.
Imbues: Windfury Weapon on a slow two-handed weapon, Flametongue Weapon on a fast one-hander with a shield. Windfury Weapon pairs well with Flametongue Totem, and Flametongue Weapon with Windfury Totem (Wowhead).
Totems and key abilities
| Level | Ability | What for |
|---|---|---|
| 12 | Fire Nova | AoE around your fire totem |
| 20 | Call of the Elements, Totemic Recall, Ghost Wolf | 4 totems at once, mana back, faster running |
| 22 | Totemic Projection | move totems without recasting them |
| 26 | Magma Totem, Mana Spring Totem, Flametongue Totem | AoE, mana for the group, party buff |
| 30 | Windfury Weapon, Grounding Totem, Reincarnation, Astral Recall | main Enhancement imbue and utility tools |
| 32 | Windfury Totem | 20% chance of an extra attack for the party |
| 30 / 40 | Call of the Ancestors, Call of the Spirits | more totem sets |
The order of Call of the Ancestors and Call of the Spirits is disputed: Blizzard (October 7, 2026) puts Call of the Spirits at 30, while beta tooltips put Call of the Ancestors at 30.
31-point talents (Elemental Mastery, Rage of the Farseer, Riptide) realistically become available at level 40, so nobody has tested them in the beta.
Tanking dungeons without a tank tree
The Shaman has no tank specialization and will not get one at launch (developers in September 2026, r/classicwow thread). Enhancement still has tools to tank dungeons:
- Rockbiter Weapon with the Spirit Weapons talent gives +30% threat (without Rockbiter, the talent lowers threat instead);
- Improved Stormstrike can reset Stormstrike after you dodge or parry;
- a one-handed weapon and a shield instead of a two-hander;
- Earth Shock as a stand-in taunt (Conquest Capped).
Wowhead: Enhancement "will be perfectly fine to bring as a dungeon tank", but bringing it to harder content is a bad idea. Mobalytics rates the Shaman tank C (October 13, 2026). WillE adds that it lacks a real taunt and defensive cooldowns.
Stats
| Specialization | What to gear for |
|---|---|
| Enhancement | 1. Strength (2 Attack Power per point), 2. Intellect (1 Attack Power through Mental Dexterity, spell crit, mana), 3. Agility; Spirit secondary, Spell Power weak (Mobalytics) |
| Elemental | Spell Power from gear; WillE: Blizzard squished spell damage heavily |
| Restoration | Spirit, which the Mindfulness talent makes much more valuable than in Classic; haste has historically been strong for Resto (Wowhead) |
Strengths and weaknesses
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| wanted in every raid (Windfury Totem, raid-wide totems) | no effective crowd control |
| mail and shield: one of the sturdiest classes | Elemental is weak in PvE (B to D) and mana hungry |
| Enhancement levels fast and saves mana | Restoration levels slowly solo; Wowhead recommends it only if you always play in a group |
| mobility: Ghost Wolf indoors, AoE with Totemic Projection | the 3 sec Call of the Elements cast and the 1 min Totemic Projection cooldown drew criticism in the beta |
In PvP, Conquest Capped (October 13, 2026) gives Elemental A (Purge, an Earth Shock interrupt, burst), and Enhancement and Restoration B.
Professions
- Enhancement: Leatherworking and Blacksmithing (easy gear upgrades, especially weapons early on), Alchemy (strong buffs). Wowhead, October 17, 2026.
- Restoration: Leatherworking (new patterns) and Enchanting (oils, including the buffed Minor Mana Oil, plus totems such as Polished Driftwood Icon).
First steps
- Pick a race: on the Horde side guides recommend Orc, on the Alliance side Dwarf is your only option.
- At level 4, do the Call of Earth quest (separate versions for Dwarf, Orc and Troll, Tauren, and Skyborne). You get your Earth Totem and Strength of Earth Totem.
- At level 10, the Call of Fire quest gives you your Fire Totem and Searing Totem. Talents also start at level 10.
- At level 20, learn Ghost Wolf first and only then take Call of Water (Healing Stream Totem). Wowhead warns that this quest is long and sends you across several zones.
- At level 30, the Call of Air quest gives you your Air Totem and a choice of weapon: Lightning's Grasp, Rage of the Storm or Tidebringer's Claw, plus Elementalist's Guard.
- As Enhancement, use a two-handed weapon with as much damage as possible, and once you have Stormstrike, the slowest one you can find (Mobalytics).
