WoW Forever Rogue Guide: Specs, Leveling, Races

Updated: 10 min read

Who the Rogue is for

The Rogue fights in melee, wears leather and has one role: damage. It cannot tank or heal. In return it gets Stealth, stuns, interrupts and escapes. According to lead designer Kris Zierhut, in fights where the boss stands still the Rogue should deal the highest single-target damage in the game.

This class is for you if you like picking the moment to strike and playing from the shadows. The French site game-guide.fr advises against it as a first character: no healing and a small margin for error. Wowhead adds that, because of Energy regeneration, every spec is "going to feel a little slow", and that outside of damage and interrupts the Rogue brings no raid buff.

Rogue in the tier lists

Conquest Capped PvP (October 13, 2026, level 60 forecast)BBA

\* Mobalytics shows the list as icons only; we read Assassination's spot from the talent tree icon, so it is uncertain.

Wowhead notes that at level 30 the specs differ very little. Nobody has played level 60 yet, so the Conquest Capped list is a forecast; it calls Subtlety "a PvP spec first". For leveling (Mobalytics, levels 1–20) and in level 30 duels (Mobalytics, October 13, 2026) the Rogue is B. All classes compared: best class tier list.

Combat and Subtlety support both a Sinister Strike build and a Backstab build. Subtlety got new talents meant to pull it away from its "PvP only" role.

What's new for the Rogue in Forever

WillE (October 17, 2026) points out that the Rogue is the only class without a brand new baseline ability. The changes are in the talents and in how old abilities work:

  • Sap no longer breaks Stealth, so after taking one enemy out you can set up the next target. Since September 24, 2026 Sap flags you for PvP.
  • Poisons have more charges (WillE: 50% more), scale with Attack Power and work together with Sharpening Stones, Weightstones and Windfury Totem.
  • Energy regenerates smoothly, and a missed ability refunds part of it. Combo points stay on the old target when you switch targets.
  • Mutilate (21 pts in Assassination): 60 Energy, hits with both weapons, 20% more damage against poisoned targets, 2 combo points.
  • Venom (31 pt finisher): poisons deal 30% more damage and have a 10% higher chance to apply for 9–21 sec. Wowhead: "effectively a second Slice and Dice".
  • Hack and Slash (Combat) replaces the weapon specializations: axe and sword give a 5% chance for an extra attack, dagger and fist weapon +5% crit, mace ignores 15% of armor. Rogues can also use one-handed axes.
  • Distract lowers Stealth detection for 10 sec, Feint sheds twice as much threat, and Expose Armor equals 5× Sunder Armor and no longer blocks it.

For all classes: talents from level 10, "milestone" talents at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points, Dual Specialization from level 40. More: talents.

Mutilate and two daggers: disputed. Blizzard's article from October 7, 2026 says of Mutilate "but both must be daggers". The beta tooltip on Wowhead (checked October 18, 2026) and WillE mention no such requirement. So for Assassination, collect two daggers: they work in both versions.

Rogue races

Every race except Tauren can be a Rogue. The only new option is Skyborne, on both sides (requires the Skyborne Heroic Pack or higher).

The beta build of October 15, 2026 (Blizzard's notes from October 16) changed the racials and removed weapon-type bonuses: Human has Ruthless instead of Sword Specialization, Orc has Savage instead of Axe Specialization, Dwarf has Earth Fury instead of Mace Specialization. The Wowhead and Icy Veins guides still describe the old state.

RaceFactionWhat matters for a Rogue (after the 15.10.2026 changes)
HumanAllianceRuthless: +2% crit; Will to Survive removes stuns
DwarfAllianceStoneform: removes bleeds, poisons and diseases, −10% physical damage taken; Earth Fury (value disputed)
Night ElfAllianceElune's Light: +10% crit for 15 sec; harder to detect in Stealth
GnomeAllianceEureka!: for 8 sec your strikes (no periodic effects) cost 10% less Energy and hit 10% harder (not in Stealth); Expansive Mind: +5% max Energy

Wowhead thinks that thanks to fast attacks the Rogue benefits from Touch of the Grave "more than any other class", but on October 15 Blizzard adjusted its proc chance and cooldown. Wowhead rated Skyborne "largely underwhelming" before Wind Blessed went up to 3%. Nobody has recalculated the rankings after the changes yet. All racials: races and Skyborne.

The most common pick is Combat. Mobalytics says it offers the most upfront damage thanks to Riposte and Blade Flurry and is likely the most reliable dungeon spec too. A beta player put it this way: "feels really bad early, but scales pretty well" (Reddit, October 12, 2026). WillE goes Subtlety instead, because Ambush, Ghostly Strike and Hemorrhage scale with a dagger and you never have to swap weapons.

Level 20. Wowhead (warstry, September 29, 2026) calls Improved Sinister Strike, Improved Eviscerate and Precision "non-negotiable" and puts the first points into Improved Sinister Strike and Remorseless Attacks. Ready builds: "Sword" 3/8/0 and "Dagger" 0/9/2 with Backstab as the builder.

Level 30, Combat 0/21/0. Order according to Mobalytics (October 13, 2026):

  1. 2/2 Improved Sinister Strike
  2. 3/3 Improved Eviscerate
  3. 3/3 Deflection
  4. 3/3 Precision
  5. Riposte
  6. 2 points in Endurance and 1 in Improved Sprint
  7. 5/5 Dual Wield Specialization
  8. Blade Flurry at level 30

Wowhead (October 6, 2026) has a similar "Blade Flurry Combat" with Flawless Execution (Eviscerate costs 10 Energy less). With the Legacy perk Talented you have 26 points at level 30 and add 5 in Hack and Slash: Wowhead calculator. Other level 30 builds: Assassination 21/0/0 and Subtlety 0/0/21.

Rotation in plain words

Combat solo (Mobalytics):

  1. Open from Stealth with Cheap Shot (from level 26): a stun and 2 combo points.
  2. Build combo points with Sinister Strike (Backstab in a dagger build).
  3. At 3 or more combo points, spend them on Eviscerate. Slice and Dice pays off when you fight several mobs in a row.
  4. When things get dangerous: Gouge, Kidney Shot, Blind, Evasion, Sprint or a bandage.

Combat in a group (Wowhead, level 30): keep Slice and Dice up all the time. Spend extra combo points on Eviscerate against low-armor targets and on Rupture against high-armor ones. Use Blade Flurry on several enemies or on a boss with full Energy.

Assassination: Mutilate only at 3 or fewer combo points ("You never want to cast a Mutilate at 4+ Combo Points", Wowhead), then Slice and Dice and Eviscerate or Rupture.

Subtlety: open with Garrote from Stealth, then Slice and Dice; Vanish and Preparation let you apply Garrote a second time.

Talents from the 31-point tier (Venom, Thousand Cuts, Adrenaline Rush) only become available at level 40.

Stats

For leveling, Mobalytics lists: Agility (Attack Power, crit, dodge), Spirit (health regeneration), Strength, Stamina. Precision now gives only 3% hit and talents no longer give weapon skill, so hit from gear is worth more. Attack Power also raises poison damage.

Strengths and weaknesses

WhereStrengthsWeaknesses
SoloVanish, Evasion and Blind let you take risks and escapeslow start; keeping Slice and Dice, Venom and Rupture up between mobs is tiring; no healing
Dungeons and raidshighest potential single-target DPS (Blizzard); Sap, Kick and Gouge; Combat has cleave with Blade Flurryno raid buff; weak AoE; Assassination suffers against poison-immune targets (common among elementals), Subtlety against bleed-immune ones
PvPSubtlety is A in the level 60 PvP forecast (Conquest Capped); combo points stay after a target switchno Blind before level 34; only B in level 30 duels (Mobalytics); worries about the Human Will to Survive

For PvP, WillE recommends Subtlety with daggers or a Cold Blood and Preparation build.

Professions, poisons and locks

Wowhead recommends Skinning and Leatherworking (for example Brawler's Leather at 20, Skulker's Leather Belt at 30) plus First Aid for bandages. With the new camping system, DPS gain the most from Lodestone (Mining), Camp Chair (Skinning) and Fish Bowl (Fishing).

Poisons according to Mobalytics: for leveling, Instant Poison on both weapons; in dungeons, Instant on the main hand and Deadly on the off hand. Always carry Blinding Powder and Flash Powder.

Mobalytics advises against poisoning your main hand with Windfury Totem ("these do not stack"). Blizzard and Wowhead say poisons now work together with Windfury Totem. Check it in game after launch.

Locks and pockets: Pick Lock opens, among other things, the door before Ironclad Cove in Deadmines. Lockpicking and Pickpocketing give you lockboxes and poison materials.

First steps

  1. Pick a race and a spec; if unsure, start with Combat.
  2. First talent points: Improved Sinister Strike and Remorseless Attacks.
  3. For Combat, get a slow main-hand weapon (Axe, Mace, Sword or Fist Weapon) as soon as possible and spend your silver on its weapon skill.
  4. At level 20, do the Stealth quest The Horn of Xelthos (reward: Pyrewood Signet Ring).
  5. At level 30, do The Eye of Bhossca: according to Wowhead, the Ruby-Adorned Blade is the best weapon available at that level.

All of this reflects the beta with its level 30 cap. Venom, Thousand Cuts and Adrenaline Rush have not been played yet.
