WoW Forever Priest Guide

Who the Priest is for

Blizzard calls the Priest "the most versatile healer": it heals directly and over time (HoTs), and it is the only class with damage absorption shields. In return it wears cloth and has few ways to escape.

The Priest suits you if you want to heal dungeons and raids or play a damage-over-time caster. According to Conquest Capped, Warrior and Priest are the slowest to reach 60, but a strong endgame role waits for both.

The Mobalytics leveling tier list (levels 1–20, checked October 18, 2026) gives the whole class C, while an earlier version of the same list had it at B. In level 30 duels (Mobalytics, October 13, 2026) the Priest is A.

Players commenting on the Wowhead list point out that it does not reflect the Penance and wand nerfs. That is exactly why Conquest Capped ranks Discipline lower: "Penance was reduced during the beta". Every class compared: best class tier list.

According to Icy Veins, Holy rewards using many different heals instead of repeating one. Blizzard says Shadow lacks the full toolkit of a Warlock.

What's new in Forever

Changes for every Priest:

  • Fear Ward and Devouring Plague for every Priest from level 20 (in Classic only Dwarf and Undead).
  • Divine Spirit is baseline from level 30, no longer a talent.
  • Shadow Word: Death is a new ability from level 32. If it does not kill the target, you take 10% of your max health as damage.
  • Prayer of Healing heals the target's party (pets included), and Renew from several Priests can be active on one target.
  • Fade reduces threat twice as much.
  • Power Word: Shield no longer costs Warrior tanks any Rage: Blizzard says Rage gain ignores damage absorption.

New "milestone" talents (golden talents at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points): Penance (Discipline, 21 points) is a 2 sec channel with a 12 sec cooldown that damages an enemy or heals an ally every second. Binding Heal (Holy, 16 points) heals you and your target in 1.5 sec, with no cooldown. Blizzard tuned it to be "as good as Flash Heal" even when you need no healing yourself. Prayer of Mending (Holy, 31 points) has a 10 sec cooldown and jumps up to 5 times within 20 yards. You reach the 31-point mark from level 40, so Prayer of Mending and Shadowform are unavailable in the beta. How the milestones work: talents.

There is no Pain Suppression, Vampiric Touch or Mind Sear.

Shadow changes from October 15, 2026

Devouring Plague, cooldown1 min24 sec
Shadow Word: Death, cooldown15 sec (Blizzard, September 30, 2026; the beta notes say 12 sec)18 sec
Vampiric Embrace, cooldown1 min30 sec

Improved Mind Flay–each tick 10 or 20% stronger than the previous one
Devouring Contagion–jumps to 2 targets
Improved Fade, Shadow Infinitytalentsremoved

According to Conquest Capped, Shadow's damage profile "barely moves" after these changes. Since October 15, 2026, every wand also requires you to stand still for 0.5 sec before shooting.

Wowhead's Discipline and Holy guides date from October 6–7, 2026, and the Shadow guides from October 8–13, 2026. They may not reflect the October 15 changes. Check the tooltips in game.

Races: who can be a Priest

You can play a Priest as a Human, Dwarf, Night Elf or Gnome (new) in the Alliance, and as an Undead or Troll in the Horde; the Skyborne cannot. Every race has 2 Priest spells of its own.

RaceFactionLevel 10 spellLevel 20 spellWho recommends it
GnomeAllianceConfounding Flash (disorients up to 5 enemies for 3 sec)Contingency Plan (30 sec ward: below 35% health it grants a shield and a HoT)Wowhead: best Alliance pick
HumanAllianceDivine Grace (instant heal on an ally below 50% health, removes Weakened Soul)FeedbackWowhead: honorable mention for Holy; Mobalytics: best for PvP
Night ElfAllianceStarshards (much stronger, 30 sec cooldown)Elune's Grace (−50% chance to be hit for 15 sec or 3 misses)Wowhead: honorable mention for Shadow
DwarfAllianceDesperate PrayerChastise (damage and a 2 sec root, Humanoids only)–
UndeadHordeTouch of WeaknessDark Sacrifice (turns health into mana)Wowhead: best Horde pick
TrollHordeHex of WeaknessShadowguardMobalytics: PvE pick (Berserking)

For the Horde, sources disagree: Wowhead picks Undead, Mobalytics picks Troll for PvE players. The cooldown of Contingency Plan and Divine Grace is also disputed: 5 min according to Blizzard, 10 min according to the beta tooltips. Humans no longer have Desperate Prayer.

In the beta build from October 15, 2026 (notes posted October 16), Blizzard changed the regular racials: the Gnome Eureka! is now an 8 sec buff that also works on Power Word: Shield, Humans get Ruthless (+2% crit) and Dwarves Earth Fury. Race rankings were written before that. All values: races and Skyborne.

Priest leveling and build

Mobalytics (October 13, 2026) recommends Shadow for leveling as "the smoothest and most efficient leveling journey". A beta player on Reddit says that wanding is still the best way to level and the spec barely matters.

Wowhead advises every Priest to start with 2 points in Wand Specialization. Shadow build for level 30 according to Wowhead (October 13, 2026):

  1. 2 points Wand Specialization (+25% wand damage).
  2. 5 points Spirit Tap.
  3. 2 points Improved Shadow Word: Pain.
  4. 3 points Shadow Focus, then Mind Flay, 2 points Improved Mind Flay and 2 more points Shadow Focus.
  5. Vampiric Embrace and 3 points Shadow Weaving.

Mobalytics uses the same 2/0/19 split, but instead of 5 points in Shadow Focus it takes 3 Shadow Focus and 2 Shadow Reach. Wowhead calculator: Shadow build for level 30. With 5 Legacy points, Wowhead adds 2 points Devouring Contagion and 3 points Improved Mind Blast.

This build was made before the October 15, 2026 changes (Improved Mind Blast moved to row 2, new Dark Inspiration). No guide has confirmed a new order yet.

Discipline gets Penance at 30 (the talent needs 20 points in the tree). In the beta you cannot have Penance and Spirit Tap at the same time, so respec before 30. Holy at 30 according to Wowhead is 0/21/0, to reach Spirit of Redemption.

Rotation and group healing

Shadow while questing: put up your buffs (Power Word: Fortitude, Inner Fire) and Power Word: Shield before the pull. Then Mind Blast, Shadow Word: Pain, Devouring Plague, and finish the target with your wand. Mobalytics: "always try to finish with your wand". At this level Mind Flay hits only slightly harder than your wand and stops your mana regeneration.

Mana comes back 5 sec after your last spell (the "five-second rule"). Spirit Tap gives +100% Spirit for 15 sec after you kill a target, so land the killing blow yourself.

Shadow in dungeons: Shadow Word: Pain on every enemy, Mind Blast on cooldown, but watch your mana and threat. Spirit Tap only triggers on a killing blow, so coordinate with your group or use Vampiric Embrace.

Healing dungeons (Discipline and Holy):

  1. Before the pull, Power Word: Shield and Renew on the tank.
  2. Heal as your main heal, Flash Heal for emergencies.
  3. When everyone is at full health, use your wand.
  4. Prayer of Healing (from 30, 3 sec cast, 40 yards) only when the whole party is in trouble: it is expensive.
  5. Holy: alternate your heals. Litany of Light refunds 20% of the base cost when your previous heal was a different spell.
  6. Drink between pulls.

Stats

  • Shadow while leveling: Spell Power, Intellect, Spirit (Wowhead); Mobalytics adds Stamina.
  • Holy and Discipline: Intellect and Spirit. Mobalytics: "Stacking as much Spirit as possible is incredible for a Holy Priest".
  • Hit: Holy Precision gives up to 18% hit chance for Holy spells, so a healer does not need to collect hit.
  • The Meditation talent lets 50% of your mana regeneration continue while casting (15% in Classic), so Spirit is worth more.

Strengths and weaknesses

StrengthsWeaknesses
Discipline is an "Unkillable Solo Spec" with the best absorbs in the game, according to Wowheadcloth armor and few escapes
both healing specs in S or A on healer listsslow leveling (Conquest Capped)
group buffs: Power Word: Fortitude, Divine Spirit, Fear Ward, Power InfusionShadow lacks identity for a long time: Mind Flay at 20, Shadowform at 40
Shadow Word: Death as an execute, Shadow strong in solo PvPShadow Weaving now only helps you, Shadow's raid viability is unclear
Holy has a flexible healing toolkit and dispelHoly uses a lot of mana, Discipline has weaker AoE healing

Some players call Shadow "just worse warlocks". If you mainly want to deal magic damage, compare it with the Mage and the Warlock.

Professions

Wowhead names two professions that "immediately stand out":

  • Enchanting: wands (Lesser Magic Wand from level 5, Greater Magic Wand from 13), oils and the Enchanted Lute for camping.
  • Tailoring: cloth gear, including the Rare Novice Arcanist's Sash, and the Faction Banner for camping.

Both camping items improve mana recovery and survivability.

First steps

  1. Pick a race: Gnome in the Alliance, Undead or Troll in the Horde, if you have no favorite.
  2. From the first levels, fight with your wand and use it for the killing blow. Remember to stand still for 0.5 sec before shooting.
  3. Spend your first 2 talent points (from level 10) on Wand Specialization. At level 10, also do the class quest for your first racial Priest spell.
  4. At 20, do the second racial quest and keep Fear Ward and Devouring Plague on your bars.
  5. At 30, decide: Shadow with Spirit Tap for questing, or Discipline with Penance for dungeons.
  6. At 40, enable Dual Specialization: Shadow for questing, Holy or Discipline for groups.
