Who the Mage is for
Blizzard describes the Mage as one of the most powerful and resourceful DPS classes. It has one of the best crowd control tools (Polymorph), the strongest area damage (AoE), and it brings buffs, food and water to the group. The price: Blizzard says it is "extremely fragile" and dies easily in melee.
If you like keeping enemies at range, slowing them and hitting several targets at once, this is your class. Looking for a character that forgives mistakes? Check our comparison of which class to start with. The Mage has one role: DPS. You spend talent points from level 10 and unlock Dual Specialization at 40.
Tier list placement
This is a beta capped at level 30, and balance changes every week. No list is official.
| Source | Date and level | Arcane | Fire | Frost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wowhead (Riyani) | 8.10.2026, level 30 | A | A | A |
| Mobalytics (Crix) | 12.10.2026, level 30 | B | B | B |
| Conquest Capped (Kir) | 13.10.2026, level 60 forecast | A | A | B |
According to Wowhead, the Mage and the Warlock have "by far the highest AOE damage" at early levels, but when the group pulls only 2–3 monsters, the Mage falls well behind. For leveling 1–20, Mobalytics gives the class A (read on October 18, 2026), behind the Hunter and the Warlock. In PvP, Conquest Capped gives Frost Mage A.
Specializations
| Spec | How it plays | For starting out |
|---|---|---|
| Arcane | spends mana for bigger damage: Arcane Blast, Arcane Missiles with Missile Barrage, new Arcane Wrath | strong AoE in dungeons; reworked on October 15, 2026 |
| Fire | heavy hits and crits: Fireball, Scorch, Pyroblast with Heating Up, Ignite | Wowhead (October 6, 2026): currently very weak at 30, mana problems |
| Frost | combat control: Frostbolt, Ice Lance on frozen targets, Fingers of Frost, Blizzard | recommended for leveling by every guide; best in PvP |
A fun option is the Frostfire hybrid: the new Frostfire Bolt counts as both a Fire and a Frost spell, so it benefits from talents in both trees. According to Conquest Capped, many Frost players will switch to it for raids.
What's new in Forever
According to Blizzard, the Mage lost no talents at all. The key changes (Blizzard, October 7, 2026):
- Frostfire Bolt (level 40): 3 sec cast, Fireball-like damage plus a DoT and a slow. It uses the higher of your Fire or Frost damage bonuses and the lower of the target's resistances.
- Comprehension: a minor skill for Mages only. Monsters drop scrolls that you read with Comprehend Scroll (General tab of your spellbook).
- New talents: Arcane Blast, Missile Barrage and Ice Lance (instant, much stronger on frozen targets).
- Ignite is now separate for each Mage. Fire gets Heating Up: crits shorten the cast of your next Pyroblast.
- Cone of Cold lasts shorter, and Improved Blizzard slows by 40% at most. These changes target bots that kited large groups of monsters.
- Ice Block is a 16-point Frost talent, Cold Snap a 21-point talent (10 min cooldown).
The October 15, 2026 beta build added more changes:
- Arcane Blast: 1.5 sec cast, each cast grants 15% of your Intellect as Spell Damage and raises the mana cost, up to 4 stacks. The effect lasts 15 sec and no longer drops when you cast another spell. The spell's own damage went down by 40%.
- Missile Barrage is now in row 1 (2 points): Arcane Blast, Fireball, Frostbolt or Frostfire Bolt can make your next Arcane Missiles faster and free.
- Arcane Wrath: a new 16-point talent with Fireball-like damage, 3.5 sec cast, extra Spell Power equal to 5% of maximum mana, 6 sec cooldown.
- Frost Blast: a new spell from level 24, damage and a 40% slow, 1.5 sec cast.
- Ice Lance on frozen targets: +200% damage (was +300%). Cone of Cold slows the first 4 targets by an extra 10% and for 3 sec longer.
- Fire: Improved Fire Blast is back, and Combustion has 3 charges again.
Since October 1, 2026, spells of a much lower rank than your level are penalized: they get less from Spell Damage and trigger talents less often. Advice like "slow with rank 1 Frostbolt" is outdated. Use Frost Blast for slowing.
Races
The Mage is available to 6 races. New for the class are Orc for the Horde and High Order Skyborne for the Alliance (a paid race that needs a Skyborne pack). Dwarf Mage still does not exist.
| Race | Faction | What it gives a Mage | What guides say |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gnome | Alliance | Eureka! (abilities 10% cheaper for 8 sec), Expansive Mind +5% mana | Mobalytics, Method: best for the Alliance |
| Human | Alliance | Ruthless +2% crit, Will to Survive removes stuns | Icy Veins: best for PvP |
| High Order Skyborne | Alliance | Read Ley Line (faster health and mana regeneration near a ley line), Wind Blessed +3% Haste | Wowhead: very good for leveling, less drinking |
| Orc (new) | Horde | Blood Fury +10% Spell Power for 15 sec (3 min cooldown), Savage +1% crit | Method and the Icy Veins table: recommended |
| Troll | Horde | Berserking +10% casting speed for 10 sec, +5% damage against Beasts | Mobalytics: best for the Horde; Icy Veins: slightly ahead of Orc |
| Undead | Horde | Cannibalize (health and mana from corpses), Touch of the Grave | Method: alongside Orc and Troll |
Blizzard changed racial abilities in mid-October 2026 (beta notes from October 16). Weapon type bonuses are gone, so the "Human with a sword" advice is outdated: Ruthless works with any weapon. The table shows the state after the change. Details: races and Skyborne.
Leveling and build
Level as Frost. Mobalytics says Arcane and Fire are not as effective solo. Wowhead (October 9, 2026) describes Frost as easy but not very fast: mana is worse than Arcane's, but you get safer PvP and huge burst from Ice Lance.
Frost 0/0/21 build for level 30 according to Mobalytics (October 13, 2026):
| Order | Talent |
|---|---|
| 1 | Improved Frostbolt 5/5 |
| 2 | Frostbite 2/3 |
| 3 | Ice Shards 3/5 |
| 4 | Piercing Ice 3/3 |
| 5 | Ice Lance |
| 6 | Improved Blizzard 1 |
| 7 | Ice Shards 5/5 |
| 8 | Shatter 3/3 |
| 9 | Fingers of Frost (at level 30) |
Wowhead (October 9, 2026) starts with Elemental Precision 5/5 for hit, and with 5 Legacy points it adds Ice Block and Cold Snap (0/0/26). Method's advice: put points into Improved Frostbolt until level 20, then into Elemental Precision, because a missed spell is a big loss.
Both builds were made before the October 15, 2026 Frost changes. Check them in the Mobalytics talent calculator. We do not list Arcane builds: the guides rely on the old Arcane Blast and Missile Barrage. How talents and Legacy work: talents.
Rotation in plain words
Frost (leveling):
- Frostbolt is your main spell: damage, a slow and a chance for Fingers of Frost.
- When the target is frozen (Frost Nova, Frostbite) or you have a Fingers of Frost proc, cast Ice Lance.
- When an enemy gets close, cast Frost Nova, step away and keep kiting.
- Finish slowed targets with your wand to save mana.
For groups: Blizzard when enemies are stacked, Frost Nova, Cone of Cold and Arcane Explosion to finish. Wowhead advises not to burn mana on small pulls. Keep Arcane Intellect and Frost Armor or Ice Armor up at all times.
Fire: Wowhead (October 6, 2026) casts Scorch 5 times on targets with a lot of health, then Fireball, and a fast Pyroblast once Heating Up is stacked.
Arcane: you build Arcane Blast stacks and cast free Arcane Missiles when Missile Barrage procs. Since October 15, 2026, the stacks no longer drop when you cast another spell, so the old advice to reset them with Fire Blast no longer makes sense. Major guides have not published an updated rotation yet.
Key spells and levels
| Level | Ability | What for |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | Comprehend Scroll | reading scrolls |
| 10 | Missile Barrage (talent, row 1) | free, faster Arcane Missiles |
| 20 (11 points) | Arcane Blast or Ice Lance (talents) | main Arcane spell, Frost burst |
| 20–30 | Cone of Cold, Ice Armor, Conjure Mana Agate | AoE with a slow, armor, mana gem |
| 24 | Counterspell, Frost Blast | interrupt, slow |
| 25 (16 points) | Arcane Wrath or Ice Block (talents) | strong Arcane spell or an emergency button |
| 30 (21 points) | Cold Snap (talent) | a second Frost Nova or Ice Block |
| 34 | Mage Armor | mana regeneration while casting |
| 40 | Frostfire Bolt, Dual Specialization | hybrid spell, second spec |
| 50 | Teleport: Dalaran | new teleport |
Levels 6, 34 and 50 come from fan sites with beta client data. Talent thresholds assume 1 point per level from level 10.
Food, water and teleports
The Mage conjures food and water, so groups always value one. Mobalytics suggests a macro that casts Conjure Water and Conjure Food with one button, plus collecting Light Feather and buying Rune of Teleportation reagents.
You regain mana with Conjured mana gems (for example Conjure Mana Agate), Evocation, mana potions and Mage Armor. Skyborne also have Read Ley Line, and Undead have Cannibalize. Buff food according to Wowhead: Sagefish Delight and Smoked Sagefish. Teleport: Dalaran is new.
Stats
Mobalytics: Spell Power > Intellect > Spirit > Stamina. Wowhead for all specs: maximize Intellect, Spell Power and Spirit. Spell hit now comes from talents: Elemental Precision (Fire, Frost) and Arcane Focus (Arcane), 5% each according to Icy Veins.
Since September 24, 2026, wands no longer gain damage from Spell Power, but Wowhead still calls them very strong in the beta.
Strengths and weaknesses
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| strongest AoE at early levels | very fragile in melee |
| crowd control: Polymorph, Frost Nova, Counterspell | depends on mana |
| Frost is hard to kill: Ice Barrier, Ice Block, Cold Snap | no in-combat healing |
| mobility: Blink, instant Ice Lance | Frost has no burst cooldown of its own |
| food, water and Arcane Intellect for the group | weaker when the group pulls only 2–3 monsters |
In the Forever Open tournament qualifiers (4,673 matches, Reddit, October 18, 2026), the Mage won 49% of duels.
Professions
- Tailoring: Method recommends it first. From level 10 you craft blue leveling gear, usually with Spell Power.
- Enchanting: together with Tailoring, it gives strong leveling gear (Wowhead).
- Engineering: options and versatility in combat (Wowhead).
Every profession also gives a camp feature with a buff, for example mana regeneration from Alchemy (Mana Well) and Intellect from Herbalism (Incense Candle).
First steps
- Pick a race: the most recommended are Gnome for the Alliance and Troll or Orc for the Horde.
- From level 6, collect scrolls from monsters and read them with Comprehend Scroll.
- Buy or craft a wand and finish targets with it.
- At level 10, choose Frost (build above).
- You can take Ice Lance after spending 10 points in Frost, and from level 24 slow with Frost Blast.
- At level 40, unlock Dual Specialization and try Frostfire Bolt.
Guides do not describe any new Mage class quests (besides Comprehension).
