Basics: rarity, prefixes, suffixes and tiers
| Rarity | Number of modifiers |
|---|---|
| Normal | none |
| Magic | up to 2 (1 prefix + 1 suffix) |
| Rare | up to 6 (3 prefixes + 3 suffixes), Rare jewel up to 4 (2 + 2) |
Every modifier (mod) is either a prefix or a suffix. On armour, prefixes are usually life, mana and defences; suffixes are resistances, attributes and utility mods.
Hold Alt over an item (on a controller, "inspect") to see prefixes, suffixes and tiers. T1 is the best tier.
Item level (iLvl) depends on the area level and decides which mod tiers can roll. It is not the character level requirement: a Plate Belt requires level 25 but can have iLvl 80. Examples (Maxroll, Mobalytics):
- an iLvl 1 amulet can only get "Hale" (10–19 life), while the best life mod, "Athlete's" (120–149), needs iLvl 56,
- the top elemental resistance tier (+41–45%) needs iLvl 82,
- Movement Speed on boots: top tier from iLvl 82, second tier from iLvl 70.
You don't always need iLvl 82: a base with the iLvl for the mod you actually need is cheaper.
A mod's chance depends on its weight relative to other mods, and a mod already on the item can't roll twice. If you know PoE 1: there is no crafting bench with metacrafts, no Harvest, no Orb of Scouring and no Orb of Alteration.
Orbs: what each one does
| Orb | What it does | Greater: min. modifier level | Perfect: min. modifier level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orb of Transmutation | Normal → Magic with 1 mod | 44 | 70 |
| Orb of Augmentation | adds a mod to a Magic item | 44 | 70 |
| Regal Orb | Magic → Rare, +1 mod | 35 | 50 |
| Exalted Orb | adds a mod to a Rare item | 35 | 50 |
| Chaos Orb | removes a random mod and adds a new one | 35 | 50 |
Greater and Perfect don't change which mod rolls; they only cut weak levels out of the pool. In 0.5.0 the Greater Transmutation and Augmentation minimum dropped from 55 to 44 (they drop from Act 4), and Greater and Perfect orbs became rarer. Don't use them on regular jewels: jewels have no tiers.
Other important orbs:
- Orb of Alchemy: Normal or Magic → Rare with 4 mods.
- Orb of Annulment: removes a random mod.
- Divine Orb: rerolls the numeric values of mods within their tier.
- Fracturing Orb: permanently locks a random mod on a Rare with at least 4 mods (since 0.5.0 it requires a specialisation on the Atlas Passive Tree).
Essences: a guaranteed modifier
Essences have 4 tiers: Lesser, regular (no prefix), Greater and Perfect. Each adds a specific mod based on tier and item type.
- Lesser, regular and Greater turn a Magic item into a Rare with a guaranteed mod: a Regal Orb where you pick the third mod.
- Perfect (and corrupted Essences, for example Essence of Hysteria) works on a Rare: it removes a random mod and adds a guaranteed one. On a full item, a Perfect Essence with a prefix mod removes a prefix.
Certainty has a price: Greater Essence of Ruin gives 18% chaos resistance, while the natural mod goes up to 27%. There is also no Greater Essence for Movement Speed, so start boots from a base that already has it.
A mod from an Essence is a crafted mod. Since 0.5.0 an item can have only 1 of them, so Greater Essence of the Body and Perfect Essence of the Body won't fit on the same body armour.
Omens: control over the result
You toggle an Omen on in your inventory (red frame = active); it is consumed on the next matching currency use. They mostly drop from endgame Ritual and from Abyss (in areas of level 65 and above). Remember: Sinistral = left = prefix, Dextral = right = suffix.
| Omen | Works with | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Omen of Sinistral / Dextral Exaltation | Exalted Orb | adds a prefix only / a suffix only |
| Omen of Greater Exaltation | Exalted Orb | adds 2 random mods (needs 2 free slots) |
| Omen of Sinistral / Dextral Erasure | Chaos Orb | removes a prefix only / a suffix only |
| Omen of Whittling | Chaos Orb | removes the mod with the lowest level (not the "worst" one) |
| Omen of Sinistral / Dextral Crystallisation | Perfect or Corrupted Essence | removes a prefix only / a suffix only |
| Omen of Sinistral / Dextral Necromancy | desecration | adds a prefix only / a suffix only |
| Omen of Abyssal Echoes | desecration | lets you reroll the options once |
| Omen of Light | Orb of Annulment | removes only the desecrated mod |
Erasure, Whittling and Light are rare and expensive. To start, Greater Exaltation and Necromancy are enough.
Desecration and the Well of Souls
Abyss bones add a hidden desecrated mod to a Rare. You reveal it at the Well of Souls (discovered in Act 2) by picking 1 of 3 options. In the campaign it is an easy extra mod; in the endgame, a source of mods you can't get otherwise.
| Bone | Used on |
|---|---|
| Jawbone | weapon, quiver |
| Rib | armour |
| Collarbone | amulet, ring, belt |
Each bone has three variants: Gnawed (maximum item level 64, for the campaign), Preserved (no restriction) and Ancient (minimum modifier level 40). With a free slot, the mod is added. With 6 mods, a random one is removed first, even a good one. Only 1 desecrated mod is allowed; Omen of Light plus an Orb of Annulment removes it reliably.
Other crafting systems
| System | Where from | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Reforging Bench | quest "Treasures of Utzaal" (Act 3) | 3 items of the same base → 1 similar item (e.g. random Essence, waystone +1 tier) |
| Salvage Bench | quest "Finding the Forge" (Act 1) | weapons and armour with quality or sockets → quality currency and Artificer's Shards |
| Alloys | Runes of Aldur, from Act 2 (Farrow) | a new crafted mod in place of an existing one, like a Perfect Essence |
| Fluxes | Runes of Aldur | change a resistance from one element to another |
| Catalysts | Breach (Genesis Tree) | quality on rings and amulets, boosts mods with a matching tag |
| Liquid Emotions | Delirium | 3 on an amulet (Decanter of Madness) give a Notable from the tree; since 0.5.0 also mods on jewels |
| Vaal Orb | currency | corruption with a random outcome; afterwards normal currency can't change the item |
Leave the Vaal Orb and Vaal Infusers (quality above 20%, with a chance to corrupt) for the very end, once the item is finished.
Your first craft step by step
The most recommended beginner route in 0.5 is the method from the Maxroll guide (ZIGGYD, June 17, 2026), repeated by players in an r/PathOfExile2 thread from September 12, 2026:
- Get a Magic item with 2 good mods (a prefix and a suffix). The rarer mod, such as Movement Speed on boots, should already be on it.
- Greater Essence: the item becomes Rare with a third, guaranteed mod (e.g. chaos resistance from Greater Essence of Ruin).
- Desecration with Omen of Sinistral or Dextral Necromancy to hit the side you are missing. At the Well of Souls pick the best of 3 options.
- For the last 2 slots: Omen of Greater Exaltation + a Greater or Perfect Exalted Orb.
- Good result? Add quality, a socket (Artificer's Orb) and a rune. Bad result? The cost was low: sell it and start a new base.
For the campaign keep it simpler, without Exalted, Chaos or Divine Orbs. Upgrade a Magic item with one good mod using Augmentation, then a Regal or a regular Essence (since 0.5.0 the campaign has more of them). A Rare with a free slot can get a mod from a Gnawed bone. In the Forbidden Rites league, Ritual in every campaign area gives crafting currency.
The cheapest endgame start (u/LtCobra, September 12, 2026): white bases plus Perfect Transmutation and Augmentation. Don't spend all your currency on one item.
Most common mistakes
- Confusing item level with the character level requirement.
- Starting a craft without checking which iLvl the tier needs.
- Using a Regal on a Magic item with 1 mod instead of an Augmentation first.
- Thinking that Omen of Whittling removes the worst mod. It removes the one with the lowest level.
- Planning 2 mods from Essences or Alloys when the limit is 1 crafted mod.
- Desecrating a 6-mod item without counting what could be removed.
- Activating Omen of Abyssal Echoes after the mod is revealed (it must be active before).
- Using a Vaal Orb before the item is finished, or Chaos Orbs on a near-hit that is worth selling.
Tools
- Craft of Exile beta: probability calculator, mod weights and an emulator to practise without spending currency. Pick the patch "Latest (Forbidden Rites - 0.5.5.3)"; the old version of the site is not up to date for 0.5.
- PoE2DB Modifiers: mods for every base, prefixes on the left, suffixes on the right, Essences and desecration below.
- In game: Alt+Shift+click on an item fills in the trade search filters (since 0.5.0). More in our trading guide.
Crafting and version 1.0
As of October 16, 2026, GGG has not announced crafting changes for version 1.0 (December 11, 2026). It brings the Duelist, Acts V and VI and a big balance patch, and such patches have changed mods before (e.g. Perfect Essence of Battle in 0.5.0). After launch, check mods and weights in Craft of Exile. More: Path of Exile 2 1.0.
