Mirrors of Life and the Hall of Mirrors

A Mirror of Life is a large blue mirror in a small room between hooded statues. Interacting with it (R1 on PlayStation, E on PC) saves the game, fully heals Rose and refills your potions, but it also respawns the enemies around. When you die, you go back to the last mirror you used.

Fast travel works like this:

  1. Activate the mirror (a normal interaction). The game shows "MAP UPDATED".
  2. Stand in front of it and hold down, which makes Rose kneel, for a few seconds.
  3. Rose arrives in the Hall of Mirrors. You see the mirrors you have already found. The names of the ones you haven't found are not shown at all.
  4. Walk up to the mirror you want and step through it.

Sources disagree on how far this takes you. Rock Paper Shotgun and IGN: each floor of the Hall of Mirrors matches one area, so at first you only travel within the area you are in, and between floors only late in the game. Radio Times and NoobFeed describe travel to any visited mirror on the whole map. No source gives the exact moment travel between areas opens up. The Ferryman will always take you between areas.

The kneeling hint comes from Eleanor, a queen trapped in the One-Way Mirror in the Main Hall. She shouts "KNEEL", but kneeling in front of her does nothing. The hint is about kneeling at the Mirrors of Life. The TheGamer writer needed more than 10 hours to figure it out.

The Ferryman: where to find him

  1. Lose the scripted first fight with Death in the Catacombs of Paris. Rose ends up at the bottom of the Collapsed Path of Orpheus.
  2. Climb north-east to a room with three skull pyres.
  3. Take the right exit. There is a glowing blue door with a symbol.
  4. Talk to the Ferryman, then use the altar in front of him.

From then on you can sail to other wharves. You have to find each one first and enter it through its blue door. On the map a wharf has a blue lantern icon. Every trip starts at a wharf, not anywhere you like. TheGamer complains that the wharves are "annoyingly sparse for such a big map".

Fast travel not working: what to check

  • The mirror isn't activated. Do a normal interaction (save) first, then kneel.
  • You only have one mirror in this area. You need at least two so there is somewhere to go.
  • You're not holding down long enough. It takes a few seconds; a quick crouch isn't enough.
  • The destination is in another area. Early on, mirrors work within one area. Use the Ferryman to reach another area.
  • The Ferryman won't take you there. The wharf must be visited. You only sail wharf to wharf, to wharves you have already entered.
  • You don't have the Ferryman yet. He only appears after the first Death fight in the Catacombs of Paris.

One player on Reddit says kneeling only started working after meeting Eleanor in the castle. Rock Paper Shotgun treats her as a hint only. If kneeling does nothing and you haven't met Eleanor yet, continue the story into the Main Hall.

The Ferryman's coin (Ferryman's Obol)

The Ferryman also has a side quest. His coin, the Ferryman's Obol, is in the treasure pile in Mammon's lair (Circle of Greed, Catacombs of Paris). Bring it to the Ferryman at any wharf. In return you get The Whisperer Arcana with the Freezing Path spell. You need it for the Temperance trial in Notre-Dame, and so for the true ending (endings).

The Hall of Mirrors and Belmont Manor

The Hall of Mirrors is not just a travel hub but also a story area with a maze. According to KeenGamer, the maze leads to an optional boss:

  1. Follow the maze, activate the Mirror Shrines and kneel at the marked spots to reveal the way.
  2. In the Recurring Belfry, break the large mirror in the middle.
  3. Go through the In-Between and down into The Descent Into Memory.
  4. The large red staircase takes you to Belmont Manor. The Succubus waits at the end.

Beating the Succubus gives you The Temptress Arcana (Life Drain) and the achievement Succubued to her wounds.... The Hall of Mirrors also hides a level with the legendary fists Bernhard's Wrath (weapons).

Map, areas and what counts toward 100%: map and 100%.
