MW4 camos and Mastery challenges

Updated: 7 min read

How the camo system works in MW4

You earn camos in one shared grind for Multiplayer and DMZ (and for Warzone from Season 1). Special camo challenges adapt to the mode you are playing, and a finished camo works in every mode. Weapons and camos count together, so you do not have to pick a single mode.

MW4 has 33 weapons (figure from Game Rant). You work through the camos in order:

TierPer weaponHow to earn it
Military8 (Military Camo 1 to 8)Rising weapon levels. Example: Han 86 (max level 72) unlocks them at levels 10, 18, 25, 34, 42, 50, 57 and 65
Special3, unique to the weaponCombat challenges unlocked at a given weapon level (mounted kills, suppressed kills, ADS kills, kills without dying and more)
Completionist: Gold1All 8 Military and 3 Special camos on the weapon, then 15 kills in one multiplayer match or 100 kills in one DMZ match
Completionist: Platinum1Gold on every weapon of the same class, then a class-specific challenge
Completionist: Harmonic Break1Platinum on 33 weapons, then a class-specific challenge
Completionist: Divergence133 Harmonic Break challenges completed, no separate challenge
Mastery3 per modeAfter Divergence, three camos in order (table below)

Weapon Prestige also has its own Pyroclast camos, covered below.

Two things that are easy to miss:

  • You can do Military and Special in parallel. Special unlocks at a certain weapon level, so you do not have to finish Military first (Windows Central).
  • DMZ requirements are usually higher, because AI enemies count too. Han 86 example: the Stormwave camo is 50 suppressed kills in multiplayer or 125 in DMZ, and Red is 3 kills without dying in multiplayer or 3 kills without taking damage 50 times in DMZ.

Platinum and Harmonic Break by weapon class

Multiplayer numbers from the Game Rant checklist (matching Esports.gg). Where a DMZ threshold is given in brackets, multiplayer uses the number before the brackets.

ClassPlatinumHarmonic Break
Assault Rifles50 headshots25 double kills (DMZ: 50)
SMGs25 kills from behind50 hipfire kills
Shotguns125 hipfire kills2 kills without reloading, 25 times (DMZ: 50)
LMGs3 kills without dying, 15 times2 kills without releasing the trigger, 25 times
Marksman Rifles75 kills while prone75 one-shot kills
Sniper Rifles75 kills while prone75 one-shot kills
Pistols20 kills from behind40 hipfire kills
Launchers2 kills without taking damage, 15 times10 kills in a match, 7 times
Melee3 kills without dying, 15 times25 kills from behind

DMZ thresholds are higher (for example AR Platinum is 100 headshots there, and Marksman Harmonic Break is 150 one-shot kills). For Snipers in DMZ the sources list 150 or 200.

Mastery in multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone

You unlock Mastery only after Divergence. The camos in each set go in a fixed order. Requirements from the official Activision blog:

ModeMastery 1Mastery 2Mastery 3
MultiplayerMercurial Drift: 10 kills in a match, 250 timesPolyatomic Reforged: 3 kills without taking damage, 300 timesOrion Reforged: 5 kills without dying, 500 times
DMZChiral: 2,500 kills against Tier 3+ enemiesRipple Tide: exfil 2 LT dog tags in a single deployment, 50 timesHelio: 25,000 kills with a Legendary weapon on a max level Operator
Warzone (from Season 1)ParallaxDamascus ReforgedEmpyros

Activision marked the Warzone requirements "[CLASSIFIED]" until Season 1 starts (November 6, 2026). Only the names are known.

The Helio number is disputed. Activision lists 25,000 kills, Game Rant lists 250,000. We follow the primary source (Activision), and you can confirm the final value in the Career menu under Challenges. According to Game Rant, Mastery challenges are universal, so they count on any weapon.

Weapon Prestige camos: Pyroclast

Once a weapon reaches its max level you can enter Weapon Prestige. It gives four camos: Pyroclast (Weapon Prestige 1, level 1), Pyroclast Terminus (max level in Weapon Prestige 1), Pyroclast Scatter (Weapon Prestige Master, level 150) and Pyroclast Cascade (Weapon Prestige Master, level 250). Game Rant describes Terminus differently (Prestige Master level 73), but the official blog says max level of Weapon Prestige 1. The camos stay after weapon prestige.

The hardest challenges and tips

This is our own reading of the numbers, not a ranking from the developers. The most demanding ones are:

  1. Orion Reforged (MP): 5 kills without dying, 500 times (Activision). This is the highest bar in multiplayer.
  2. Helio (DMZ): 25,000 kills (Activision) or 250,000 (Game Rant).
  3. Chiral (DMZ): 2,500 kills against Tier 3+ enemies (Activision).
  4. Polyatomic Reforged (MP): 3 kills without taking damage, 300 times (Activision).
  5. Harmonic Break on Launchers: 10 kills in one match, 7 times in MP and 15 times in DMZ (Game Rant).
  6. One-shot kills on Sniper and Marksman Rifles: 75 in MP, 150 to 200 in DMZ (Game Rant).

Practical tips from the sources:

  • Start Special as soon as it unlocks for a weapon. Do not wait for Military to finish (Windows Central).
  • Gold is 15 kills in one match. Pick a weapon you know and a mode with plenty of fights. You need Gold on all 33 weapons, including the knife, pistols and launchers (Activision, Game Rant).
  • Mind the chain. Platinum needs Gold on the whole class, Harmonic Break needs Platinum on 33 weapons, and Divergence needs 33 Harmonic Break challenges. So Divergence practically means going through every weapon (our conclusion from the Activision rules).
  • Unlock the Gunsmith at DMZ level 10. It makes it easier to add required attachments (such as a suppressor), but it costs DMZ Cash (Windows Central).
  • Combine modes. Progress counts in Multiplayer and DMZ, and you can collect Military in both. Weapon levels rise faster with Double Weapon XP tokens, more in our fast leveling guide.
  • Match the weapon to the challenge. See the best weapon builds for attachments that fit your class. DMZ challenges are also covered in the DMZ guide.

Special challenges also include kills with the weapon mounted, for example the Han 86 Smoke camo unlocks at weapon level 25. Which weapons have them and how many kills they need is known only from one weaker source, so we do not list those numbers.

What MW4 does not have

  • Diamond camos. The equivalent of the top of the path is Divergence, followed by Mastery. There are also no Dark Spine or Dark Matter style camos from earlier games.
  • Zombies. MW4 has the Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ, so there are no Zombies camos.
  • Weapon camos for the campaign. The campaign gives Double XP tokens (3 of them) and Double Weapon XP tokens (2 of them) per the reward list, plus calling cards and operators. The Elite campaign calling cards are Veteran Completer, Realism Completer and YOLO Completer.
  • A single camo count per weapon that every outlet agrees on. Officially (Activision) there are 8 Military, 3 Special, 4 Completionist and 3 Mastery per mode. Outlets give other totals (7, 12 or 14), so we stick with Activision's version.

Camo names stay in English in every language version. The localized names in the official blogs are just a curiosity: Divergence is "Divergenza" in Italian, "Divergence" in French and "Divergência" in Portuguese, and Harmonic Break is "Rottura armonica" (IT) and "Rupture harmonique" (FR). In the game itself, look for the English names used in this guide.
