Who the Hunter is for
The Hunter has one role: damage (DPS). According to Blizzard, your pet can tank while you play solo or in a small group, and the Hunter has the longest range of any class. The price is a dead zone of up to 8 yards where ranged attacks do not work, plus no stun and no interrupt. Hunters wear mail armor.
This is the class for you if you play solo a lot. Icy Veins and Conquest Capped rate the Hunter as one of the best leveling classes: your pet takes the hits and you barely need to eat or drink. According to Wowhead, it is easy to pick up but has a high skill ceiling.
| Spec | Wowhead, level 30 (Oct 8, 2026) | Mobalytics, level 30 (Oct 12, 2026) | Conquest Capped, level 60 forecast (Oct 13, 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beast Mastery | S | A | B |
| Marksmanship | S | S | A |
| Survival (melee) | S | A | S |
On the Mobalytics leveling tier list (checked October 18, 2026), the Hunter is S alongside the Warlock. The Conquest Capped author himself calls Survival Hunter in S at 60 "the most debated placement". All rankings compared: which class to play.
Specs: Beast Mastery, Marksmanship and Survival
| Spec | Playstyle | Key changes in Forever |
|---|---|---|
| Beast Mastery | your pet deals most of the damage | Summon Hawk (16-point talent): a hawk attacks the target for 18 sec, up to 2 at once; Focused Fire: more damage for you and your pet |
| Marksmanship | ranged shooting | Lone Wolf (11 points): +20% damage without an active pet; Careful Aim: Attack Power from Intellect; Trueshot Aura (21 points); Sniper Shot (31 points) |
| Survival | dual-wield melee and traps | Predator's Edge, Counterattack (16 points), Strider Kick (21 points), Expose Prey, Lacerating Strikes (31 points) |
Icy Veins writes that Marksmanship "remains nearly unchanged", while Survival is "completely redesigned" around dual-wield melee combat.
- Sniper Shot: 4 sec cast, 15 sec cooldown, stronger than Aimed Shot. It has 45 yards of range and extends the range of your next 3 shots by 10 yards.
- Strider Kick: a weapon attack plus 30% movement speed for 3 sec.
- Expose Prey and Lacerating Strikes: attacks on a target with Hunter's Mark can enable Mongoose Bite, and Mongoose Bite applies a bleed for 21 sec.
- Summon Hawk shares a cooldown with Arcane Shot.
What's new in Forever
- Pets scale with your gear and can no longer receive player buffs that raise stats. There is a new Foxes family, and every family has its own unique ability.
- Traps work in combat, with a 30 sec cooldown, separate for fire and frost. Since October 15, 2026, you can have 1 active fire trap and 1 frost trap at once, and fire traps scale with Attack Power. You can only place them under yourself.
- Aimed Shot is baseline for everyone at level 20, no talent needed. Multi-Shot shares its cooldown, Arcane Shot no longer does.
- Aspect of the Beast also grants melee Attack Power (for Survival), and Disengage reduces twice as much threat.
- Trueshot Aura affects the whole raid since October 15, 2026.
- A new Auto Attack/Auto Shot game option switches you automatically between melee and Auto Shot.
Since the beta update of October 15, 2026 (Blizzard's notes from October 16), Auto Shot once again requires you to stand still for 0.5 seconds before shooting, "matching early versions of World of Warcraft". You still fire Auto Shot while casting Aimed Shot or Sniper Shot. Wowhead and Icy Veins guides written before this change say Auto Shot has no hidden cast time. That is out of date.
Hunter pets: how they work in Forever
According to Wowhead (October 7, 2026), 1 point of your Stamina gives your pet 2 HP, and your pet gets 30% of your armor, 10% of your highest Attack Power and 100% of your critical strike chance. Since October 15, 2026, it inherits the higher of your melee or ranged crit chance. You can see all of it on the Pet tab of the character window.
Every family can learn Bite or Claw (sometimes both) and Dive or Dash. On top of that, each has one unique ability:
| Family | Unique ability | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Bat | Sonic Blast | slows the target's casting |
| Bear | Swipe | hits 3 targets |
| Bird of Prey (formerly Owl) | Mine! | damage and disarm |
| Boar | Charge | charge, root, +Attack Power |
| Carrion Bird | Demoralizing Screech | – |
| Cat | Prowl | – |
| Crab | Pinch | slow |
| Crocolisk | Dismember | reduced healing on the target |
| Fox (new) | Trickster's Dance | dodge and attack speed for 12 sec |
| Gorilla | Thunderstomp | – |
| Hyena | Tendon Rip | – |
| Raptor | Savage Rend | – |
| Scorpid | Poison | – |
| Spider | Web | – |
| Tallstrider | Dust Cloud | reduces armor |
| Turtle | Shell Shield | – |
| Wind Serpent | Lightning Breath | attack from 20 yards |
| Wolf | Furious Howl | +Attack Power for the party |
On October 15, 2026, Blizzard nerfed three abilities. Dismember: −25% healing (was 50%), 6 sec (was 10), 15 sec cooldown (was 6). Sonic Blast: −30% casting speed (was 60%), 20 sec (was 30), 60 sec cooldown (was 30). Mine!: 3 sec (was 4), 90 sec cooldown (was 60). Pet rankings in guides were made before this change.
Which pet should you pick? For PvE damage, Wowhead recommends the cat The Rake (or another very fast cat) with Claw rank 4, "due to bugs". According to a beta player, a pet with an attack speed of 1.2 or faster deals 60–70% of Beast Mastery damage. The 04AM channel suggests a wolf (Furious Howl) for groups and a spider or crocolisk for PvP. A happy pet deals 125% damage (04AM), so keep it fed. Turn off Growl in groups.
Best race for a Hunter
You can play a Hunter with 8 races. Gnomes and Undead cannot be Hunters, and the Human Hunter is a new combination in Forever. Skyborne require the Skyborne Heroic Pack (€29.99) or higher.
| Race | Faction | What it gives a Hunter (after the October 15–16, 2026 changes) |
|---|---|---|
| Night Elf | Alliance | Elune's Light: +10% crit for 15 sec (your pet gets +10% too); Shadowmeld also in combat |
| Human (new) | Alliance | Ruthless: +2% crit; Will to Survive removes stuns |
| Dwarf | Alliance | Earth Fury: +2% critical damage; Big Game Hunter: +5% damage against Beasts |
| High Order Skyborne | Alliance | Wind Blessed: +3% Haste; Read Ley Line |
| Orc | Horde | Blood Fury: Attack Power for you and your pet (3 min cooldown); Savage: +1% crit |
| Troll | Horde | Berserking; Regeneration 20% in combat; Beast Slaying |
| Tauren | Horde | Plainsrunning: up to 30% speed, requires constant movement; Endurance: +5% health |
| Windshaper Skyborne | Horde | Wind Blessed: +3% Haste; Skysight: +10% run speed |
Conquest Capped (October 14, 2026) and Wowhead (October 7) pick Night Elf for the Alliance and Orc for the Horde: your pet inherits your crit chance, so crit racials boost you both. Before the beta, Icy Veins (September 17, 2026) picked Human and Troll. For the very start, Conquest Capped likes the Tauren, because Plainsrunning gets you to level 10 fastest.
These race recommendations were made before the racial changes of October 15–16, 2026: Blood Fury now has a 3 min cooldown instead of 2, Shatter Curse reduces less damage, and weapon type bonuses are gone. Nobody has recalculated them yet. Full details: races and Skyborne.
Hunter leveling: best spec and talent build
The most recommended leveling spec is Beast Mastery. Conquest Capped (October 13, 2026) writes that your pet scales with gear and tanks, and that speedrunners preparing for the race to 60 chose BM with a dip into Marksmanship. Mobalytics also recommends BM, and a beta player on Reddit called it "basically leveling cheatcode". Even as Marksmanship, keep a fast cat out for now. Wowhead: "A pet will currently do more damage than the bonus you would get from Lone Wolf".
Wowhead builds (Docoda, October 11, 2026, level 30, 21 points) in the order you spend points:
| Spec | Talent order | Calculator |
|---|---|---|
| Beast Mastery | Deadly Aspects 5/5, Focused Fire 2/2, Improved Revive Pet 2/2, Pathfinding 1, Unleashed Fury 5/5, Summon Hawk (level 25), Bestial Swiftness, Ferocity 3, Intimidation (level 30) | Wowhead BM |
| Marksmanship | Lethal Attacks 5/5, Careful Aim 5/5, Improved Arcane Shot 5/5, Mortal Shots 2, Trueshot Aura, Mortal Shots up to 4, Scatter Shot | Wowhead MM |
| Survival | Improved Tracking 5/5, Savage Strikes 2, Surefooted 3, Deterrence, Counterattack, Predator's Edge 1, Deflection 3, Predator's Edge up to 4, Deflection 4, Strider Kick | Wowhead SV |
Versions with the Legacy perk Talented (up to 5 extra points): BM, MM, SV.
Sources disagree on how to start a BM Hunter build: Wowhead opens with Deadly Aspects, Conquest Capped with Endurance Training. The Conquest Capped plan for 31–60: Ferocity, Bestial Discipline, 4 points in Frenzy, Bestial Wrath at 40, and the rest in Marksmanship (Lethal Attacks, Careful Aim, Trueshot Aura). Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40. How talent milestones work: talents.
Rotation in plain words
Leveling (Conquest Capped): from level 10, send your pet in and let it land 2–3 attacks before your first shot so it holds threat. Keep Aspect of the Hawk on at all times, use Serpent Sting on mobs that live longer, and from level 16 drop Immolation Trap under the mob (the most mana-efficient option). Once the mob is on you, weave Raptor Strike between two Auto Shots.
Beast Mastery (Wowhead, level 30):
- Hunter's Mark if you have time, then Serpent Sting and keep it refreshed.
- Before Summon Hawk: Aimed Shot (1 target) or Multi-Shot (several targets) and Arcane Shot whenever they are ready.
- With Summon Hawk: Summon Hawk → Aimed/Multi → Summon Hawk → Aimed/Multi → Arcane Shot → Aimed/Multi, then repeat. Keep 2 hawks up and do not refresh them too early.
Marksmanship: Hunter's Mark → Serpent Sting → Arcane Shot and Aimed Shot (or Multi-Shot) whenever they are ready.
Survival: Hunter's Mark → Serpent Sting → in melee, always queue Raptor Strike. Priority: Mongoose Bite, Strider Kick, Counterattack. Use the speed from Strider Kick to step out of melee and weave in shots (Arcane Shot, Serpent Sting, Aimed Shot) until Raptor Strike and Mongoose Bite come back. Weapons: dual-wield, or a two-hander for maximum weaving.
Key abilities and levels
| Level | Ability | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | Arcane Shot | on every mob |
| 8 | Concussive Shot | shoot and walk away from the mob |
| 10 | Tame Beast, first pet | Taming the Beast quest; talents start at this level |
| 16 | Immolation Trap | most mana-efficient |
| 20 | Aimed Shot, Aspect of the Cheetah | Aimed Shot is baseline, 2 sec cast |
| 20 (11 points) | Lone Wolf (MM) | +20% damage without a pet |
| 25 (16 points) | Summon Hawk (BM), Counterattack (SV) | milestone talents |
| 30 (21 points) | Trueshot Aura (MM), Strider Kick (SV) | milestone talents |
| 30 | Intimidation (BM), Feign Death | Feign Death resets a bad pull |
| 40 | Bestial Wrath (BM), Dual Specialization | – |
| 40 (31 points) | Sniper Shot (MM), Lacerating Strikes (SV) | milestone talents |
We calculated the milestone talent levels from the rule of 1 point per level from level 10, with all points in one tree. Only Conquest Capped gives the levels for Feign Death and Bestial Wrath.
Stats
- Agility comes first (Conquest Capped). According to 04AM, it gives dodge, armor, crit, Attack Power and Ranged Attack Power.
- Crit and Stamina count twice, because your pet inherits 100% of your crit chance and gets HP from your Stamina.
- Intellect is worth more for Marksmanship than in Classic: Careful Aim converts 20–100% of your Intellect into Attack Power.
- Spirit helps your mana and health in long fights (04AM).
Strengths and weaknesses
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| fastest solo leveling, your pet tanks | dead zone of up to 8 yards |
| longest range, excellent kiting | no stun and no interrupt |
| Feign Death, traps in combat | weaker at AoE (Wowhead) |
| very strong in groups when pulling 2–3 mobs at once | Beast Mastery falls off at 60 because the pet cannot keep up with your gear |
| PvP: organized battlegrounds and world PvP | you have to manage ammo and feed your pet |
Conquest Capped predicts that at 60 "most Hunters will move to Survival or Marksmanship". In the Forever Open duel tournament qualifiers (October 17, 2026), Hunters won 47% of their matches.
Professions
- Skinning + Leatherworking: Wowhead calls Leatherworking "a no-brainer", because it has many new or changed Bind on Pickup recipes that are very strong for their level.
- Engineering: guns, helmets, grenades and mines.
- Conquest Capped also suggests First Aid plus Fishing with Cooking.
First steps
- Up to level 10: Hunter's Mark and Auto Shot (stand still for 0.5 sec), Raptor Strike when the mob reaches you, Arcane Shot from level 6, Concussive Shot from level 8.
- Buy new ranged weapons from vendors at levels 3, 11, 14 and 16. Restock ammo in every town.
- At level 10, pick up the pet quest from your trainer (Taming the Beast or the starting zone version). According to 04AM, you tame 3 different creatures in it and then get Tame Beast.
- First pet with Bite 2 (Conquest Capped): Prairie Wolf Alpha (Mulgore), Starving Winter Wolf (Dun Morogh), Webwood Silkspinner (Teldrassil), a prowler in eastern Elwynn Forest, Elder Mottled Boar or surf crawler (Durotar). Around level 16, many players switch to a bear (Bite, Claw, Swipe).
- Pet abilities are under Beast Training in your spellbook. You buy some from the pet trainer in capital cities and learn the rest by taming wild beasts.
- Pick up Skinning as early as possible. Once you get a feel for the class, try soloing harder targets, for example in Wailing Caverns (Wowhead).
