Difficulty levels at a glance
The names below come from the August 17, 2026 State of Play and press coverage. Older names from 2025 (such as "Gamechanger" or "Extreme Mode") still float around fan wikis, but they no longer apply.
| Level | What it changes | When available |
|---|---|---|
| Wayfarer | Gentler, story-focused: enemies attack weakly, their stance breaks easily, lots of flashy finishers | Available (Epic: you can drop down to it from the default level) |
| Pathbreaker | Default level, per Epic Games | From the start |
| Hellwalker | More advanced, adaptive enemy AI | Sources differ (see below) |
| Sixty-Six Days | Same AI as Hellwalker plus a limit of 66 deaths, separate save | After your first playthrough |
Whether Hellwalker is available from the start or only after you finish the game is not officially confirmed, and sources differ. We do not settle it here: check the menu after launch.
Is a higher level just more enemy health?
No. Liang says plainly that the team does not just change stats: it changes the AI and the enemies' behavior trees. At higher difficulties, enemies are more active and have more skills, including more dangerous ones. His example was the Flower Bride boss on Hellwalker: she attacks more actively, and one white flower becomes three attacking from different directions. By Liang's account, that is hard even for some of the designers in the studio.
According to Epic Games, on Hellwalker enemies "read your habits" and change attack patterns in real time. In another interview Liang added that the AI is not actually reading your inputs: it runs on behavior trees, but it can feint, interrupt combos and wait for your move.
The easy end changes too. Per Liang, on Wayfarer enemies move "like characters in a martial arts movie", and their stances are easy to break. The developers have not published exact numbers (damage, parry window width). A Steam player wrote in 2025 that Wayfarer lowers damage and widens the dodge and parry window, but that is an unofficial opinion.
Sixty-Six Days: Hellwalker with a death limit
Sixty-Six Days (66 Days) is the same AI level as Hellwalker plus one restriction: you can die only 66 times. The rules confirmed by the developers and the press:
- You unlock the mode after your first playthrough. Liang told Epic the aim was to avoid frustrating players on the first run: "the second run is about pure gameplay and challenge".
- It has a separate save. When you touch a bell, the game saves automatically, there is no manual save, and you cannot reload a state from before your mistake.
- When your days run out, you see a short ending animation, the save becomes a record of history, and the game offers a new start.
- Liang: on your first playthrough, 66 days is only narrative framing, not a time limit.
Nobody on the team has beaten this mode without dying.
Changing difficulty mid-game
There is no official information on whether you can change difficulty during a playthrough, or between which levels. Epic writes that you can drop from Pathbreaker to Wayfarer, but does not say when. The one certain point: Sixty-Six Days has its own save, so you cannot switch away from it midway. We will check this after launch.
Platinum and achievements on any level
Liang wrote on Bilibili in September 2026 that all achievements can be obtained on the first three difficulty levels. Even playing as Wayfarer the whole time, you can unlock them in a single playthrough. Push Square concluded from this that the PS5 Platinum Trophy is achievable on the easiest level. Sixty-Six Days is not required for it. The full trophy list was not public as of October 22, 2026.
Dying to a boss in phase two: you do not restart from zero
Multi-phase bosses come with good news. According to Epic Games, if you die in the second phase, you return to the second phase, and your resources stay with you after death. Insider Gaming reported the same after a showing in August 2025. These are press-event reports, so we will confirm them after launch. More on the fights themselves: bosses. Whether the game is a soulslike, and why the developers say it is not: is it a soulslike.
How long is Phantom Blade Zero
In an interview on October 8, 2026, Liang said a full playthrough takes about 25-30 hours for an experienced player who does not get stuck on bosses. He added that he cannot predict how much time you will spend on tougher fights. In December 2025 he told Game Rant about 20-30 hours for the story alone. Regular enemies do not respawn and map resources are finite, so the game deliberately avoids grinding. There is no official figure for 100 percent completion.
New Game Plus and endings
New Game Plus is in the game. Liang stresses that new content is not locked behind it: the fresh experience comes mainly from powerful weapons from late bosses, which you can bring against early bosses on your second run. According to GamingBolt, NG+ has no exclusive trophies or achievements.
The game has eight endings. Per Liang, they depend on side quests and on whether you hold the right items at key story moments. If you skip everything except the main path, you may get a bad ending. Specific names and conditions are unknown before launch (no spoilers here).
What players say on Steam
Steam threads show two camps. In the thread "Real men plays on HELLWALKER only" (54 replies), the author urges playing on the hardest level from the start, while another player claims you must finish the game first (his own claim, with no source). In "To Players Who Are Worried the Game Is Too Difficult" (20 replies, October 20, 2026), a player reassures others that the developers dislike wasting players' time: running back to a boss after a death is one of the things the game is meant to avoid. In "Do different difficulties actually feel different?" (35 replies), the author worries that difficulty levels, as in Where Winds Meet, "did nothing". These are player voices, not established facts.
