Where these tips come from
Phantom Blade Zero launches on October 29, 2026, so none of this comes from the finished game yet. Each tip names its source: official (the developers, PlayStation, Steam), interview (Soulframe Liang, the game's director) or demo (press reports from hands-on events, with a date). Button layout, names and numbers may change before release.
1. Pick your difficulty on purpose
The official names are Wayfarer (for players who simply want to enjoy the story), Pathbreaker, Hellwalker (more advanced, adaptive enemies) and Sixty-Six Days (not for the faint of heart). They appear in the PlayStation Blog post of August 17, 2026 and in RPGamer and GamingBolt coverage of August 18, 2026. Epic calls Pathbreaker the default. If you rarely play action games, take Wayfarer. A typical action fan should start on Pathbreaker. More detail: difficulty levels and how long to beat.
Sixty-Six Days unlocks after you finish the game (RPGamer, August 18, 2026). Whether you can change difficulty mid-campaign is not known before launch.
2. Do not hide behind your guard
The developers say this is not a classic soulslike (GamesBeat, June 19, 2024). The Outer Haven demo report of June 10, 2024 warns that turtling behind a block will not get you far. Stay on the offensive. Full mechanics: combat system and parrying.
3. Read the attack colors
Interview with Soulframe (GamesBeat, June 19, 2024): attacks with a blue flash should be parried, attacks with a red flash should be dodged, because red attacks cannot be parried. He says the main difference between bosses is the rhythm of these attacks. Master this one skill first.
4. Parry instead of only blocking
Press-Start demo (October 9, 2026): parrying costs no Sha-Chi and drains the enemy's Sha-Chi gauge, and a successful parry or a perfect dodge teleports Soul behind the enemy (called Ghoststep in press reports). Holding a block does use up Sha-Chi. The resource is called Sha-Chi, not "Sha-Qi" or "Shadow".
5. Do not rely on parrying alone
The Game Rant writer (October 8, 2026) kept losing to the weapon Jagged Steel, because repeated hits built up bleeding. Outer Haven (October 8, 2026) adds that button mashing will not carry you. Mix parries, dodges and your own attacks.
6. Swap weapons mid-fight
You can carry two main weapons at once. In the demos, switching weapons refilled Sha-Chi, but with a cooldown (Press-Start, October 9, 2026; Outer Haven, October 8, 2026). Soulframe told 4Gamer in October 2026 that simply switching weapons can sometimes make a boss much easier. See the weapons list.
7. Rest at bells
Bells (called Inanis Bells in some previews) are checkpoints. In the demos they restore healing and supplies, reveal the map and allow fast travel (Press-Start, October 9, 2026). Officially, bells also let you fast travel between discovered locations (PC Gamer, August 18, 2026). A red thread leads from a bell toward your next objective (GamesRadar, October 9, 2026).
8. Resources are finite
Enemies do not respawn when you rest at a bell (Press-Start, October 9, 2026), and resources on the map are finite (Soulframe, 4Gamer, October 2026). The currency in the demo was Remnant Dust (the name also appears officially on the Treasure Basin accessory). It pays for skills and upgrades, so do not spend it blindly.
9. Experiment thanks to the Reforging Talisman
Officially, the Reforging Talisman resets a weapon's level, returns all invested materials and lets you reinvest them straight into other gear (PlayStation Blog, August 17, 2026). You can change your mind. Weapon and skill growth: skills and progression.
10. You earn weapons from bosses
According to Soulframe, you get every weapon by defeating a boss, and there are at least 50 bosses (GamingBolt, October 11, 2026). Some bosses are optional and hidden off the main path. Do not rush them too early: Press-Start and CGMagazine both mention optional bosses far tougher than the early story. Full list: bosses.
11. Explore and talk to the locals
Officially, secrets are hidden throughout the Wulin, and talking to people and finishing some side quests can open new story paths (PlayStation Blog, August 17, 2026). Go back to old areas once you get a new tool, since some obstacles can only be passed with Phantom Edges later (Game Rant, October 8, 2026). The developers do not put markers on the map.
12. Dying to a boss does not erase progress
In the demos, if you die in a later phase of a multi-phase boss, you return to that phase rather than the start of the fight (Outer Haven, October 8, 2026). Come back stronger and finish it.
Do not count on keyboard and mouse being comfortable: Steam lists the game as Gamepad Recommended, and there is no official information about mouse and keyboard controls.
What we do not know before launch
The default button layout of the final version, the exact name of the healing item, whether difficulty can be changed mid-game, and exactly how Sha-Chi works (the demos differ in details). We will check after release.
FAQ
Which difficulty should I pick the first time?
If you mostly want the story: Wayfarer. A typical action player: Pathbreaker. Hellwalker is for those who want an opponent that bluffs and adapts. There is no official "first playthrough" recommendation.
Does Phantom Blade Zero have a tutorial?
According to CGMagazine (October 8, 2026), chapter 1 opens with a linear tutorial that explains movement, dodging, parrying and attacking, and then the story jumps forward.
Can you play on keyboard and mouse?
There is no official information. Steam shows "Gamepad Recommended" and full controller support (as of October 22, 2026).
Do enemies respawn?
No. Soulframe confirmed to 4Gamer in October 2026 that enemies do not respawn and map resources are finite.
Is it a soulslike?
The developers say no (GamesBeat, June 19, 2024), and GamesRadar (October 9, 2026) says the game is "not out to punish unnecessarily". The level layout and bells recall Souls, but combat is closer to a combo-driven action game.
