WoW Forever Warlock guide

The Warlock at a glance: who it is for

The Warlock wears cloth and is physically weak, so a demon protects it. According to Blizzard, its damage can now "compete with any other spellcaster". It also brings tools no other class has: Healthstone, Soulstone and Ritual of Summoning.

It is a good first character if you want to play at range. Conquest Capped calls the Hunter and the Warlock the most forgiving classes, because the pet takes the hits.

For leveling, Mobalytics (checked October 18, 2026) gives the Warlock an S alongside the Hunter; an earlier version of the same list had it at A.

Duels: Mobalytics gives the Warlock an S at level 30 (October 13, 2026). In the Forever Open qualifiers (October 17, 2026, Horde only, level 30), Warlocks won 60% of their fights and Demonology 63%. Against Mages, Warlocks won 73% of their duels. Three of the four Warlocks in the finals played the exact same Demonology build, 5/21/0.

What's new in Forever (as of October 15, 2026)

According to fan site comparisons, the Warlock gained and lost more talents than any other class. The key changes from Blizzard's October 7, 2026 article and the beta notes:

  • Banes: Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom are now Bane of Agony and Bane of Doom. A target can carry one Bane from each Warlock, but Banes are a separate category from curses, so Bane of Agony and Curse of the Elements work at the same time.
  • Curses: Curse of the Elements now boosts all magic (including Arcane, Nature and Holy), and Curse of Shadows was removed.
  • DoTs can crit (Wowhead), and since October 1, 2026 so can Hellfire.
  • Firestone and Spellstone are now weapon imbues that stack with Wizard Oil: Firestone adds Fire damage and crit, Spellstone adds Shadow damage and spell Haste.
  • Pets scale with the Warlock's stats. Life Tap scales with Spirit, and Drain Soul has a rising chance to give a Soul Shard with every tick.
  • New threshold talents: Bane of Havoc (15% of the damage you deal to other targets also hits the marked target) and Soul Link (moved down from 31 to 21 points) at 21 points; Wrack, Demonic Pact and Incinerate at 31. Conflagrate moved to the 16-point threshold.
  • Demonic Pact keeps Demonic Sacrifice active when you summon another demon, so for the first time you get Demonic Sacrifice and Master Demonologist together.

On October 15, 2026, Blizzard replaced the Malediction talent with Grim Reach (+10/20% range for Affliction spells). Shadow Mastery now gives +2/4/6/8/10% Shadow damage (it was 1–5%), and Destructive Reach increases the range of Destruction spells by 10/20%.

Wowhead's builds from October 9, 2026 still include Malediction, which no longer exists. We did not find a Wowhead guide that covers the October 15 changes.

Demons: which one for what

DemonWhenWhat forDemonic Sacrifice / Master Demonologist
Impquest at level 1–2the start; players find it disappointing: it runs out of mana fast and is fragile+Shadow damage / +Fire damage
Voidwalkerquest at level 10holding enemies and staying safe; Torment is much stronger than in Classicmana / less physical damage taken
Succubusquest at level 20the highest damage of all pets (Wowhead: about 1.5 times a Voidwalker)+Fire damage / +Shadow damage
Incubuslevel 20 (unconfirmed)new in Forever, works like the Succubus (Wowhead groups both as Sayaad)same as Succubus
Felhunterno level in sourcesdamage between Voidwalker and Succubus (Crix); Spell Lock and Devour Magic, valued in PvPhealth / less magic damage taken

Between levels 25 and 30 the Voidwalker loses enemies more often, because Torment only gets a new rank every 10 levels (Wowhead).

Races: Human, Gnome, Orc, Undead and Troll Warlock

Five races can be Warlocks. The Troll Warlock is new in Forever, and the Skyborne cannot be Warlocks.

RaceFactionWhat it gives a Warlock (after October 16, 2026)Method, October 17, 2026
HumanAllianceRuthless +2% crit chance (Affliction and Destruction like crit), Will to Survive removes stuns (the strongest PvP racial)S
GnomeAllianceEureka! lowers spell costs but does not work on DoTs; Expansive Mind +5% manaB
OrcHordeBlood Fury +10% Spell Power for 15 sec, Savage +1% crit chanceA
UndeadHordeWill of the Forsaken (Wowhead: like a free PvP trinket slot), Cannibalize also restores mana, Touch of the GraveB
TrollHordeBerserking helps Destruction (Icy Veins) but does not speed up DoTs and drains; Rapid Regeneration with Life Tap cuts downtimeC

Icy Veins (September 17, 2026, before the beta) recommended Gnome and Undead, while Wowhead says you cannot really pick wrong, so choose the race you like.

In the October 16, 2026 beta build Blizzard heavily changed racial abilities, and the numbers for Shatter Curse, Touch of the Grave and Eureka! differ between sources. The developers want races closer to each other, so pick the one you like. Details: races and Skyborne.

Leveling and a build up to level 30

Method (October 17, 2026) recommends leveling as Affliction; Demonology only comes into its own later. Mobalytics recommends Affliction and Demonology and calls the Warlock one of the most efficient leveling classes. According to Wowhead, drain tanking is back: DoTs plus Drain Life instead of a wand, because Drain Life gives health back.

Affliction 26/0/0 with 5 points from the "Talented" Legacy perk (Mobalytics, October 16, 2026, includes the October 15 changes) includes:

  • Improved Corruption 5/5: instant Corruption and +10% damage;
  • Suppression 3: hit and less threat;
  • Grim Reach 2/2: +20% range;
  • Improved Bane of Agony 2, Pandemic 3, Nightfall 2, Malevolence 4.

Without the perk you have 21 points at level 30. Other specs: Wowhead (October 9) plays Demonology 3/18/0 and Destruction 1/0/20.

After level 30, Method's Affliction takes Siphon Life, then Fel Concentration, Soul Siphon at 34 and Wrack at 40. General talent rules: talents, calculator: Mobalytics.

Demonic Knowledge is disputed. Blizzard says it raises your and your pet's spell damage by up to 33% of your level, while Wowhead says up to 100% of your level. Mobalytics suggests spending your Talented perk points mainly on this talent (a huge amount of Spell Power). Check the tooltip in game.

The rotation in plain words

Affliction (Wowhead, single target):

  1. Send in your demon (the Succubus from level 20, or the Voidwalker to play safe).
  2. Apply Corruption and Bane of Agony.
  3. Drain Life until the target dies. Low on mana, use Life Tap instead; at full health or with the target below about 20%, use your wand.

Soul Siphon boosts drains by 12% for each other Affliction effect on the target (up to 36%), so keep at least three on it. When Nightfall procs, cast an instant Shadow Bolt (Mobalytics).

Demonology (Wowhead): send in the Succubus, apply Corruption (plus Bane of Agony on a tougher enemy), cast Searing Pain, which marks the target through Demonic Brand, then Drain Life. Repeat Searing Pain about every 6 sec when the mark fades.

Destruction (Wowhead): the pet takes the enemy, you apply Bane of Agony, Corruption and Immolate, then cast Shadow Bolt until the enemy turns on you. Conflagrate just before Immolate runs out. Shadowburn is your execute: when the target has less health than one hit (about 150 at level 30), it refunds the Soul Shard.

In groups: on a boss always keep Bane of Agony up, plus Curse of the Elements when your group has casters or Curse of Recklessness for a melee group. Be careful with Fear, because a fleeing enemy pulls more.

Key spells and levels

LevelWhat you get
1–2Shadow Bolt, Demon Skin, Immolate (10 copper at the trainer), Imp quest
4Corruption, Curse of Weakness, Grimoire of Blood Pact (Demon Trainer)
6Life Tap
8Bane of Agony (instantly "tags" the enemy as yours), Fear
10Drain Soul, Create Healthstone, Voidwalker quest, first talent
14 and 18Drain Life, Searing Pain
20Succubus quest, Demon Armor, Rain of Fire; 11-point talent (Demonic Sacrifice)
2516-point talent: Curse of Exhaustion, Fel Domination or Conflagrate
30Hellfire, Create Soulstone rank 2, Torment rank 3; 21-point talent: Soul Link or Bane of Havoc
40Dual Specialization; 31-point talent: Wrack, Demonic Pact or Incinerate

Based on Method, Crix and Wowhead; talent thresholds without the Legacy perk. Soul Fire, Wrack and Bane of Doom are not available at the beta's level 30 cap.

Healthstone, Soulstone and Ritual of Summoning

  • Healthstone: you can create it from level 10, rank 2 from 22. The Improved Healthstone talent was removed.
  • Soulstone: put it on your healer before the fight (Wowhead). You get rank 2 at level 30.
  • Ritual of Summoning is the only way to summon a player in Forever, because Meeting Stones do not summon anyone. Keep 2 spare Soul Shards (Wowhead).
  • Portal of Summoning (new, Wowhead): a portal from which 2 party members summon a chosen player; everyone out of combat and standing still.

Soul Shards still do not stack (Crix). A Reddit comment (October 10, 2026) says summoning inside instances was removed; Blizzard has not confirmed this.

Stats

Priority according to Mobalytics (October 16, 2026):

  1. Spell Power (it is already on low-level gear).
  2. Hit: the Suppression talent gives 5%.
  3. Intellect.
  4. Critical Strike: DoTs and Hellfire can crit.
  5. Spirit (Life Tap), then Stamina.
  6. Haste last: it does not speed up DoTs or drains (Wowhead).

Strengths and weaknesses

Pros: three distinct specs, easy hit from Suppression, utility and control (Healthstone, Fear, curses), and according to Method the Warlock is very tanky for a cloth wearer. In PvP, Conquest Capped calls Soul Link Demonology the hardest target in the game, because Drain Life heals under pressure.

Cons: reliance on the pet, Soul Shards take up bag space, expensive Grimoires for pet abilities, low mobility. In world PvP you take a long time to recover after dying (Conquest Capped).

Some players on Reddit (October 10, 2026) think the Warlock has been nerfed too hard, and others worry about its raid role, because Improved Shadow Bolt no longer buffs Shadow Priests. These are opinions, not measurements.

Professions

  • Tailoring + Engineering: the highest expected damage potential thanks to bombs and cloth embroidery (Wowhead).
  • Tailoring + Enchanting: you disenchant your own crafts, and crafting and camp buffs are very strong in Forever (Method).

Launch recipes are not known yet. From the Auction House, Mobalytics recommends Lesser Arcane Elixir (+15 Spell Power) and Briny Seafood Stew (+14 Spell Power, +5% XP).

First steps

  1. Sell your starting items, buy Immolate for 10 copper (Wowhead) and do the Imp quest.
  2. Buy a wand (Lesser or Greater Magic Wand) and visit your trainer on even levels.
  3. At level 10, do the Voidwalker quest. On the Horde side the Undercity version is easier, because the Orgrimmar one sends you to the dangerous Skull Rock; on the Alliance side Stormwind is faster than Ironforge (Method).
  4. At level 20, do the Succubus quest.
  5. Around level 30, do the Blackfathom Deeps quest for the Gravestone Scepter wand, which Mobalytics considers overpowered.

Compare the Warlock with other classes in our tier lists, and check the racial abilities before picking a race.
