Does Phantom Blade Zero have a demo?
No. As of October 23, 2026, there is no demo in any store where the game is up for pre-order.
| Store | Demo | What the store shows |
|---|---|---|
| Steam (PC) | No | No demo, the game is listed as "coming soon" |
| Epic Games Store (PC) | No | No demo and no announcement |
| PlayStation Store (PS5) | No | A demo page appeared briefly in August 2026 and disappeared |
Insider Gaming put it plainly on October 19, 2026: "You currently can't download a free Phantom Blade Zero demo."
S-GAME has not announced a demo for before or after launch. There is also no word on a PlayStation Plus Premium Game Trial or a PC trial version. The studio has not said there will definitely be no demo, though. It simply says nothing about it.
The game launches on October 29, 2026 at 03:00 CET (Steam shows October 28 because it uses Pacific time; it is the same moment). Times in other zones and preload: everything about the game.
Why the game was not in Steam Next Fest
Steam Next Fest in October 2026 ran from October 19 to October 26. Valve's rule: a game needs "a publicly playable demo by the time the festival begins" and a release after October 26, 2026.
Phantom Blade Zero met the date requirement, since it launches on October 29. But it had no demo on Steam, so it was missing from Next Fest. Players noticed right away: a thread titled "No demo for Next Fest?" appeared on the Steam forum on October 21.
The demo promises: it was supposed to come in 2024
The developers have promised a public demo twice already. Here is how it went.
- July 30, 2023, ChinaJoy. The game's official X account wrote that the game's director confirmed a "30 minutes playable demo" for 2024. MP1st reported it as a planned public demo. Sources differ on who exactly made the announcement, so we simply say: the director.
- February 1, 2024, the "Year of the Dragon Special Trailer: Rain and Blood". Soulframe Liang, the game's creator, promised "a playable demo as we plunge deeper into 2024".
- June 7, 2024, Summer Game Fest. Instead of a downloadable demo, S-GAME announced the World Tour Demo: a version playable only at trade shows.
- July 17, 2024, the apology. The studio wrote on X: "Please forgive us, as the current demo is not yet available for large-scale testing." It added that this demo was focused on combat.
- June 2, 2026, the letter about the delay. S-GAME mentions the "first offline hands-on demo in 2024" only as a milestone in the game's history. There is not a word about a demo for everyone.
- August 11, 2026, the PS Store leak. Unofficially: a demo page briefly appeared in the Chinese PlayStation Store and was then removed. MP1st expected a demo after the State of Play on August 17. VICE wrote on August 18 that the demo was not announced there, which could mean it was either delayed or scrapped.
As of October 23, 2026, the leak has led nowhere. We found no comment on it from S-GAME or PlayStation.
In an interview with Wccftech (October 8, 2026), Liang admitted that the trailers and trade show demos showed "the tip of the iceberg", mostly combat. He told DualShockers that the 2024 demo had only three bosses in a row and zero exploration.
Where you could play it: press and trade shows only
The only people who played the game were visitors at trade shows and S-GAME events, and journalists at press previews. According to S-GAME, "over 12,000 participants" played the 2024 World Tour Demo, and over 5,000 players tried the S-Party 2025 demo.
| Date | Event | What was shown |
|---|---|---|
| June 8-10, 2024 | Summer Game Fest, Los Angeles | World Tour Demo: short, about 20 minutes, built around boss fights |
| July 26-29, 2024 | ChinaJoy, Shanghai | World Tour Demo |
| August 21-25, 2024 | gamescom, Cologne | World Tour Demo: three bosses (Tie Sha the Frenzy; Commander Cleave; Huangxing, The Sunken Pillar of Kunlun) |
| September 28-29, 2024 | Tokyo Game Show | World Tour Demo |
| July 26 - August 26, 2025 | S-Party 2025: Beijing, Shanghai, Cologne | "Seven-Star Sword Array" demo (one hour according to S-GAME): exploration, story scenes, a double boss fight |
| report from October 4, 2025 | Tokyo Game Show 2025 | IGN: an hour of combat and boss battles |
| January 2026 | CES 2026 | A choice of three difficulty levels, no time limit, several bosses (The Outer Haven) |
| June 2026 | Summer Game Fest 2026 | About an hour-long demo, two bosses, all weapons from the start (Way Too Many Games) |
| published October 8-9, 2026 | Press previews in Los Angeles and Beijing | A near-final version on PC or PS5; The Outer Haven played about 6 hours, CGMagazine 5 hours |
The 2024-2025 demos were combat-focused slices. Some mechanics may have changed since then. The bosses seen at the shows are covered in our bosses article.
What to watch instead of a demo
If you can't play it, you can watch it. The newest material comes first, since it shows the version closest to the final game.

How to buy without risk
On PC, a refund effectively replaces a demo. On PS5 it is harder.
| Store | Before launch | After launch |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | Pre-purchase refund at any time | 14 days from release day and less than 2 hours of play |
| Epic Games Store | Self-refund if the pre-purchase is marked "self-refundable" | 14 days after release and less than 2 hours of play, if the game is marked "refundable" |
| PlayStation Store | Cancellation only if the download has not started (including preload) | No refund once the download has started, unless the game is faulty |
Steam. Valve lets you refund a pre-purchase at any time before launch. After launch, the standard 14 days count from release day, and your playtime must be under 2 hours. That is enough to see how the game runs on your PC. Before buying, compare your hardware with the PC requirements.
Epic Games Store. The rules are similar: 14 days after release for pre-purchases and less than 2 hours of play. This only applies to products marked "refundable" or "self-refundable", so check the label on the store page when you buy. Keep in mind that the Fortnite bonuses for buying on Epic also disappear after a refund.
PlayStation Store. You can withdraw from a pre-order only if the main game download has not started. If you paid 14 days or less before launch (in other words, if you buy now), you have 14 days from the date you were charged. Pre-order bonuses stop working after cancellation.
The PS5 preload starts on October 27, 2026 at 03:00 CET. If automatic downloads are on, the game may start downloading by itself, and then you can no longer cancel the pre-order. Want to keep the refund option? Turn off automatic downloads before the preload.
You can also simply wait for reviews. Unofficially (a leak, S-GAME has not announced it), the review embargo lifts on October 26, 2026, three days before launch. Prices and edition differences: editions and physical copy.
What players say
The lack of a demo divides players. On the Steam forum, the "NO DEMO = SCAM" thread from October 21, 2026 got over 20 replies. The author writes: "Be like Capcom man, show your game before buyer's remorse." The replies are cool: "2 hour refund policy exists. That's more than enough." and "Not having a demo does not make something a scam."
Others wanted a demo to check how the Unreal Engine 5 game runs before launch. On Reddit (September 18, 2026), one player sums it up: "You demo will be the 2-hour refund window", and another reminds: "Not on playstation".
