Combat at a glance
The game is not out yet (launch on October 29, 2026), so this guide covers what the developers and journalists showed at events and in demos. Combat may have changed between builds, so each mechanic below comes with a source and a date.
| Mechanic | What it does | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Blue attacks | Can be blocked or parried | developer interview, June 19, 2024; demo, October 9, 2026 |
| Red attacks | Cannot be parried or blocked, you must dodge | developer interview, June 19, 2024; demo, October 9, 2026 |
| Sha-Chi | Combat resource instead of stamina, enemies have it too | demo, October 8, 2026 and October 9, 2026 |
| Ghostep | After a successful parry or perfect dodge, Soul appears behind the enemy | press demo reports only, October 9, 2026 |
| Primary weapons | Two equipped at once, one button to swap | demo, October 9, 2026 |
| Phantom Edges | Secondary weapons, such as an axe or a cannon | official: PlayStation Blog, August 17, 2026 |
| Executions | Flashy finishers on a staggered enemy | demo, October 8, 2026 |
Blue and red attacks
This is the core of the system. Every dangerous enemy attack is marked with a colored flash:
- Blue: you can block it (hold the button, which drains the yellow meter under your health bar) or parry it. Demo reports call this a Brutal Move, and a successful parry gives you a powerful counterattack.
- Red: you cannot block or parry it. You have to dodge, and a precisely timed dodge is a Perfect Dodge. RPG Fan calls this a Killer Move, and you can counter after it too.
Soulframe Liang, the founder and game director, said in 2024 that what mainly sets bosses apart is the rhythm of their blue and red attacks. So you learn to read colors rather than memorize one sequence.
On Hellwalker difficulty, the parry window is only 2 frames shorter than on normal, according to Qianli Ma (PC Gamer, July 28, 2025). Exact frame counts and damage percentages from fan wikis do not match that statement, so we do not quote them.
Ghostep and Sha-Chi
Ghostep is a name from press reports, not from official materials (outlets also write "Ghoststep" and "Ghost Step"). After a successful parry of a blue attack or a Perfect Dodge of a red one, Soul automatically appears behind the enemy and you can hit them in the back. It is not a separate button.
Sha-Chi (the spelling used by PlayStation Blog and most outlets) replaces the classic stamina bar. Soul and his enemies have a health bar and a separate Sha-Chi meter, which works like a stagger gauge tied to guarding. When you drain an enemy's Sha-Chi, a flashy execution or heavy damage opens up. When yours runs out, you are defenseless and cannot chain combos.
What exactly spends and charges Sha-Chi differs between demo versions. The safe summary: blocking and strong skills spend it, a perfect parry does not, and swapping weapons refills it (with a cooldown). We will verify this in the full game.
Weapons, Phantom Edges and swapping
Steam promises over 30 primary weapons, and PlayStation Blog lists 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges (Steam says "more than 20"; we will check the exact number after launch). Official examples include Drunken Sword Style, the twin blades White Serpent and Crimson Viper, Soft Snake Sword, iron fists, the Tiger Cannon and Flaming Mane. More in the weapons article.
In demos you carried two primary weapons at once, and swapping (D-pad left) restored Sha-Chi. A Phantom Edge was triggered with its own button (R2 in the October 9, 2026 demo) and was also used to cut chains and break barriers. The developer says some enemies have a mechanic that only a fitting weapon beats, so swapping alone can sometimes lower the difficulty a lot.
Combos, animation canceling and executions
RPG Fan describes many combo strings (no air combos) and a separate moveset for each weapon. You can cancel an animation mid-combo straight into a Brutal Move or Killer Move "without much penalty".
You finish a staggered enemy with an execution, and according to Game Rant, skill tree upgrades can make executions heal you. Soulframe said there are moves that kill several surrounding enemies at once, and that the flashy moments are short, with no long quick-time events.
What players say
On Steam there is a thread called "Cancel anything, auto-move etc." (52 replies). The author claims the game has "no commitment" and low stakes. Others reply that you can cancel moves in Sekiro too, and that here it is harder to land a parry in the middle of a tight combo. These are player opinions after the demos, not facts about the game. The thread does not explain where "auto-move" comes from, and we found no such statement from the developers.
Healing, lock-on and controls
- Healing: journalists describe a potion bound to D-pad down (2024 demo) and Inanis Bells that restore healing. The official name of the healing item is not in any source, so we do not give one.
- Lock-on: we only know the Summer Game Fest 2024 demo (R3). There are no reports about the 2026 build.
- Controls: Steam lists "Gamepad Recommended" and full controller support (DualShock and DualSense). There is no information about keyboard and mouse. The demo layout (Square for light attacks, Triangle for Sha-Chi attacks, L1 to guard and parry, R1 to dodge) may differ in the final version.
Difficulty levels
The level names are Wayfarer (easiest, focused on the story), Pathbreaker (standard), Hellwalker (hardest, adaptive enemies) and Sixty-Six Days (a mode capped at 66 deaths). What they change and which to pick: difficulty levels and length. Tips for your first hours: beginner's guide.
FAQ
How does the combat system work in Phantom Blade Zero?
You read the attack color: block or parry blue, dodge red. The Sha-Chi resource replaces stamina, and a successful parry or dodge gives you a counterattack.
How does parrying work?
Just before a blue attack lands, you press the guard button (L1 in the demo). A parry does not spend Sha-Chi, weakens the enemy and triggers Ghostep.
Does the game have a "Shadow" or "Sha-Qi" mechanic?
We found neither in any source. The official resource is called Sha-Chi.
Is the combat insane and fast?
The developers promise fast, flashy combat that is easy to learn at the basic level and deep for advanced players. We will give a full verdict after launch.
Can you cancel anything in combat?
The only confirmed option is animation canceling into Brutal Move and Killer Move (RPG Fan). The phrase "cancel anything" comes from players.
